PREPS: Carson wrestlers third in tournament

Carson High's wrestling team took third place at the Capitol City dual-meet tournament Saturday at Çarson Middle School.

The Senators went 2-1 in dual meets, knocking off Manogue 51-12 and Galena 64-18 before losing 53-23 to Lowry.

Carson finished with 138 points, 13 behnd second-place Fallon and 69 behind Lowry which finished with 207.

"I think we were the second-best team out there," Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. "It was the luck of the draw. We wanted to go against Lowry.

"I think we did pretty well for the first meet of the season. Overall, I was pleased with how we wrestled."

Carson was without a 220-pounder and heavyweight the entire day, as most of the football players elected to take a few days off after their grueling season.

Besides dual meets, there were two rounds of individual matches.

Kyle Sharp (106) went 5-0 with five pins as did Cole McCarthy (126). Nick Lanni (132) also went 5-0 with three pins and two technical falls.

Adan Ortega (120), Dominic Kinder (120), Tristian Wadsworth (132) and Jordan Luhrs (152) all posted 4-1 records. Kinder and Wadsworth filled gaps for other teams. Luhr had four pins, while Kinder and Ortega added three pins apiece.

Sam Mercado (112), Austin Brown (138), Colby Brown (145), Jalen Morizza (182) and Brady Rivera (170) all had 3-2 records. Morizza was filling in for Nico Garcia, who has yet to pass his hydration test.

Austin Brown won all of his matches by pin, while Mercado, Morizza and Rivera all had two pins.

Carson will compete in the James Riddle Invitatonial in Oakdale, Calif. next Saturday.

CARSON JV FARES WELL AT HUG

RENO - Anthony Estrada (126) and John Artz (106) won individual titles at the Hug JV mee on Saturday.

Austin Kiesow (126) was second to Estrada, while Jose Galinda (220) was second in his division. Caden Lehman was fourth at 106 and 138-pounder Alex Cunningham was fifth.

DAYTON WRESTLERS AT YERINGTON

YERINGTON - Race Shelton was the bright spot for Dayton's wrestling team at the Yerington Invitational on Saturday.

Shelton, a 138-pounder won three matches. Nick Aquino (145), Edgar Diaz (152) and Josh Joyner (heavyweight) all had two wins.

Rebekah Fillipini (106) went 1-3.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dayton splits

The Dayton girls basketball team split two games at the Fernley Classic on Saturday. In the opener Dayton fell 56-37 to Fernley before bouncing back against Owyhee, 55-28.

Dayton played without the services of Andrea Ramirez and Taylor Hill who had other school commitments.

Against the host school, Maribel Ledezma chipped in 13 points with nine steals and four blocks. Cora Jeffreys added eight points. Kelly Combs added four points, five rebounds and nine steals.

Against Owyhee, Devlynn Lahair led the team with 14 points, five rebounds, three blocks and four steals. Ashley Hill scored 13 and Ledezma added 12, with six steals . Combs added six points and nine rebounds.

Dayton, 2-2, plays at the Comstock Classic on Thursday.

JV BASKETBALL

Dayton JV splits

The Dayton girls JV basketball team lost a close battle to Lowry 25-21 at the Pershing County JV Tournament on Saturday. The Dust Devils bounced back with a 40-11 win over Smith Valley to close the tourney.

Muranda Fowler hit a 3-pointer to cut the Lowry lead to two with less than a minute to play, but the running clock format of the tournament, hurt the Dust Devils' chance of a comeback.

Dayton had balanced scoring with no one scoring more than five points.

Against Smith Valley, Ashley Sandy scored 10, Taylor Ingersoll and Makaila Marshall each added eight.

Dayton, 3-1, plays at 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at Yerington.
