ROUNDUP: Dayton hoop tournament starts today

The 2011 Sutro Classic Invitational starts today with games scheduled for Dayton Intermediate and Dayton High School.

The format is a bit different this year with only six teams - Dayton, Pahrump, Bishop, Rite of Passage, Yerington and Douglas' JV team. Each team will play two games today and two on Saturday.

Dayton opens the tournament against Pahrump at 3 p.m. and comes back to play Bishop at 7:30 p.m.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 and above.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson girls drop to 0-4

MORRO BAY, Calif. - Atascadero opened up a 26-9 first-quarter lead en route to a 57-48 win over Carson at the Morro Bay Invitational Thursday night.

The loss dropped Carson to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in 4A play.

"We played a lot better," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said. "I wanted to work on some things, so we started out in a zone. We got in a hole (26-9 after one).

"We played better in the second half. We went man-to-man with a little half-court trap. We actually outscored them (32-20). As a team we just didn't shoot the ball well."

Eliza Matley led Carson with 14 points, while Tiana McAllister Daggs added 10. Savannah Smith scored a season-high eight points, while Emily Collins and Maddi Saarem added seven points.

Dayton girls win tourney opener

VIRGINIA CITY - Maribel Ledezma scored 19 points and Taylor Hill added 17 to lead the Dust Devils to an easy first-round win over Smith Valley, 52-23, in the first round of the Comstock Classic on Thursday.

The win moved Dayton to 3-2 going into today's game against Hawthorne.

"They weren't a team to look past," Dayton coach Cliff Serawop said. "They got warmed up in the fourth quarter."

Dayton put the game out of reach in the first quarter, outscoring Smith Valley 22-4, as Ledezma had 10 points and nine steals in the opening quarter. All but two of Hill's points were 3-pointers. She also pulled down nine rebounds and blocked nine shots.

Devlyn Lahair had six rebounds and Andrea Ramirez pulled down five rebounds.

FRESHMAN BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins at Galena tourney

RENO - Carson won two games at the Galena High tournament on Thursday.

Carson beat Hug 44-41 as Kyle Steele scored 13 and Cameron Price added 10.

The Senators recorded a 36-33 victory over Douglas in its second game. Nolan Shine led Carson with 12 points, while Steele, Price and Corey Reid all hit key free throws down the stretch.

FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson outlasts Spanish Springs

Natalie Young, Michelle Perry and Maddi Preston all scored in double figures to lead the Senators to a 43-35 win over the Cougars.

Young led the way with 15, Perry scored 12 and Preston added 10.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson wins big over Spanish Springs

Skye Simpson knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points to lead Carson past Spanish Springs 44-30.

Natalie Salas and Gina Peacock finished with 10 apiece.

Carson plays at Reno tonight.
