ROUNDUP: Douglas boys cruise in tourney finale

MINDEN - In a game that the Douglas boys' basketball team led by as many as 23, the Tigers claimed a 65-52 win over Faith Lutheran Saturday afternoon at the 12th annual Carson Valley Classic.

Douglas went 3-0 in the tournament, while Faith Lutheran went 2-1, Carson 1-2 and South Tahoe 0-3.

Senior Trevor Shaffer had 19 points for Douglas (4-0) in the win while Hunter Myers added 18, including a 9-for-9 performance from the line and a 3-pointer.

Nate VonAhsen and Austin Evans each had seven points.

For its part, Douglas converted 15 of 23 free throws in the game and connected on six 3-pointers.

Dust Devils win Sutro Classic

DAYTON - Dayton High beat Yerington 51-49 to win its own Sutro Classic Saturday night.

Dayton went 4-0 in the tourney and reached the finals with a 46-26 win over Rite of Passage.

The Dust Devils won't have much time to savor this win because they visit Yerington on Tuesday night.

"We played well," coach Jason Santos said after his team improved to 6-2. "Our defense is really carrying us right now. This might be the best man defense we've played since I've been here."

Santos praised the defensive work of Sean deRubertis, who held Yerington's Tyler Peoples to three points, all on free throws.

Tyler Firestone and Dylan Taylor shouldered the offensive load, scoring 18 and 19 points, respectively.

Firestone scored 18 in the first three quarters, enabling the Dust Devils to stay close. Yerington led 42-35 after three periods.

Taylor took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of his 19 as the Dust Devils outscored Yerington 16-7.

"Dylan got hot," Santos said. "We started attacking the basket."

VARSITY WRESTLING

Carson 3rd in tourney

OAKDALE, Calif. - Carson High's wrestling team placed third at the Riddle Invitational on Saturday.

Carson finished with 185 points, eight behind second-place Lodi and 90.5 behind the host school, Oakdale.

"Some kids looked real good," said coach Tim McCarthy. "This was a good tournament for us. There is a good level of competition."

The competition will get tougher next week at the Reno Tournament of Champions which starts at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Carson's only champion was Cole McCarthy, who grabbed the 126-pound title by going 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall.

Kyle Sharp (106), Adan Ortega (120) and Nico Garcia (182) all finished second with 3-1 records. Garcia lost in overtime, and McCarthy felt there were several "bad" calls by the officials.

"Cole wrestled well," said coach McCarthy. "Kyle looked real good until the last match (technical fall). Adan beat the No. 2 seed in the second round and then won the next round. Nico wasn't super sharp."

Nick Lanni (132) was third with a 4-1 record, while 220-pounder Patrick Cooke was fourth with a 3-2 mark. Austin Brown was fifth at 138 at 3-2, while Cody Cunningham was fifth at 160. Jordan Woodward was sixth at heavyweight with a 2-3 record.

It was Cooke's first performance of the season.

"He is super strong," McCarthy said of Cooke. "We have to work a little more on getting him more technical. He's a great kid with a good attitude."

Dayton third in pool

FALLON - The Dust Devils finished third in their pool at the Greenwave Invitational.

Rebekah Fillipini and Edgar Diaz went 4-1 in their respective weight classes, while Joey Moore was 3-2. Danny Alcantara got his first career pin en route to a 2-3 record.

Carson JV has two winners at McQueen

RENO - Carson High had two first-place finishers at the McQueen JV Tournament on Saturday.

Kaleb Wold (106) and Dominic Kinder (120) won in their respective weight classes. John Artz (106), Anthony Estrada (126), Andrew Cunningham (138) and Jalen Morizza (182) had second-place finishes. Austin Kiesow (126), Alex Cunningham (132), Jose Calderon (195) and Javier Torres (220) garnered third-place finishes, while Casey Stevens (106) and Sean Robles (132) finished fourth.

No team scores were kept at the event.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson loses to Mission Prep

MORRO BAY, Calif, - Carson dropped its fourth straight game at the Morro Bay Invitational, 46-41, to Mission Prep Saturday morning.

Carson is now 0-6 entering its Tuesday 4A road game at Damonte Ranch at 6 p.m.

The Senators used just eight players. Kaitlyn Holmes hasn't been on the trip because of SAT testing, and Maddi Saarem was inactive after getting elbowed in the eye on Friday.

"I think we were a little worn down," coach Todd Ackerman said. "We didn't have the bounce in our step we needed. Emily (Collins) played very hard and Tiana (McAllister-Daggs) worked hard. She just went and went until she couldn't go anymore. I think we learned a lot the last four days. We're starting to understand each other."

Carson trailed 13-12 after one and 28-25 at the half. Carson briefly took the lead in the third quarter, but Mission Prep came back and led by three entering the final period.

Savannah Smith had a season-high 11 points, while Collins added 10. Eliza Matley finished with nine, McAllister-Daggs six and Elena Thurman added five.

Dayton girls top Coleville

VIRGINIA CITY - The Dayton girls basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to knock off Coleville Saturday morning at the Comstock Classic.

Dayton was down 23-18 at half, but tied it after three, at 27. The Dust Devils out scored Coleville 12-6 in the fourth.

Dayton played without its captain Taylor Hill who had a school commitment. Kelly Combs scored 12 points from the post and Andrea Ramirez added 10 points to lead Dayton. Cora Mebius added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks. The Wolves keyed on Maribel Ledezma, but the junior made her presence felt defensively with five blocks and seven steals.

Dayton, 5-3, plays Tuesday at Yerington. The quadruple header starts with the JV girls game at 3 p.m.

Sierra Lutheran loses two

ZEPHYR COVE - Sierra Lutheran dropped its last two games at the Whittell Tournament on Saturday.

The Falcons lost 33-21 to Fernley and 32-22 to Silver Stage.

Tiffany Patrick scored eight in the Fernley game and then added 14 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots against Silver Stage. Mckenzie Tynes scored five against Fernley and grabbed eight rebounds, and then scored three points, blocked three shots and grabbed seven rebounds against Silver Stage. Erin Henry grabbed 15 rebounds total in the two games.

Sierra Lutheran, 1-5, hosts Smith Valley on Friday.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson rallies to beat Lassen

RENO - Natali Salas rallied Carson to a 44-37 win over Lassen on Saturday.

The Senators trailed 37-36 with a minute to play, but Salas led an 8-0 run with three buckets to give her team the victory.

Gina Peacock led in scoring with 18, while Salas finished with 10.

Carson is now 4-1.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins Galena title

RENO - Carson won two games Saturday to win the championship at the Galena Tournament.

Carson beat North Valleys 45-31 in the semis and then knocked off Galena 52-38 in the championship game.

Kyle Denning scored eight and Nick Mohlenkamp added eight.

FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson girls lose first

RENO - Lassen High dealt the Senators their first loss of the season, 56-43, at the Sierra Winter Classic on Saturday.

Maddi Preston, Michelle Perry and Destanee Cachucha all had 10 points in a losing effort.

Carson finishes 3rd

RENO - Carson rebounded from a 34-30 loss in the semifinals to Reno to knock off North Valleys 42-27 for third place at the Galena Tournament.

Jimmy Redlark led Carson with eight, while Brett Paulson scored all four of his points in the final period.

In the loss to Reno, Ross Dagdagan had 10 and Nolan Shine added eight.
