Big Brother and the Holding Company coming to Minden

Janis Joplin's original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, will perform on Jan. 13 at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

Local band Big Bad Wolf will perform before Big Brother and the Holding Company.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour including beverages and snacks. This concert is part of the "Second Friday Concert Series" presented by the Carson Valley Arts Council.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day of the show.

New Winter classes forming at the Brewery Arts Center

The Brewery Arts Center will offer dozens of classes in the new year. The classes also make great gifts.

The popular courses such as pottery, painting, drawing and jewelry making will be starting in January. Classes in sculpting and silk painting also are being offered in 2012.

New this winter, students can learn to dance in folklorico or ballroom dance classes. Also new is Zentangle, another art form.

Kids can enroll in the popular After School Art as well as Pottery for Kids. Students can study media arts in the BAC's Digital Media Center. Courses include editing with final cut pro and claymation.

Gift certificates are also available.

Coin minting to be held Saturday

The Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club will celebrate the holidays with a special coin minting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the museum, 600 N. Carson St. Regular museum admission applies.

Historic Coin Press No. 1 will mint several medallion designs with each bearing the famous "CC" mint mark.

Reno Coin Club will host the State and National Parks Quarters exchange as well as the Presidential Dollar exchange. The club will present educational exhibits on coin collecting. Ancient, obsolete U.S. and animal coins and paper money will be on display.

Visitors can take a tour and see the exhibits on the history of the Carson City U.S. Mint: the historic coin press No. 1, the "CC" coin collections and how coins are made, or watch the video in the Marshall Mint Theatre on the history of the famous "CC" mint.

Admission is $8 adults; free for children 17 and younger and museum members.
