The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City IHOP for moving forward and making the tough decision to reopen three months after a deadly shooting rampage at the restaurant.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Jim Peckham for tireless double duty as executive director of both the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and Friends in Service Helping in Carson City. Peckham is leaving the museum post after five years on Dec. 31 only because he believes FISH needs his undivided attention.
SILVER DOLLAR: To NDOT and Lyon County for teaming up on a rumble strips installation project along a deadly 10-mile stretch of Highway 50 East out of Carson City.
WOODEN NICKEL: To a state unemployment rate that will force skilled Nevada guardsmen to fight for their lives for jobs on the homefront.
