CHS hoops fall short; Wrestlers win big

LAS VEGAS - Godinez Fundamental High School-Santa Ana outscored Carson 12-5 in the final quarter to grab a 38-35 win in a consolation game at the Las Vegas Shootout Wednesday afternoon.

Carson concludes tournament play today at 1:30 p.m. against Wilson of Oregon. The Senators are 3-7, including an 0-2 mark in league play.

Carson was up two at the half and four at the end of three. The teams were tied at 35 with less than 90 seconds remaining, and the Senators went to a four-corner offense with the intent of taking the last shot of the game.

"They were sitting in a 2-3 zone, so we just played catch out top," said first-year head coach Carlos Mendeguia. "With 25 seconds to go, we got impatient and turned the ball over.

"They went and scored. Then there was a jump ball and the possession arrow favored them. They went to the line and scored."

Carson's offense is still sluggish and learning life without Matt Nolan and Chance Quilling, who are gone for the season. Chris Lopez, Dylan Sawyers and Rafe King all played point guard.

"Guys still aren't comfortable (in different positions)," Mendeguia said. "We're still struggling putting the ball in the basket. We had some good looks that didn't fall."

King led Carson's scoring with 15, while Sawyers added eight with Sage Smith and Ty Keefer tallying five each.

Mendeguia said the players will get Friday off, but will practice Christmas Eve and then Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday leading up to the Dec. 29 game against Reno, which was rescheduled from Nov. 29.

Carson pins Wooster

Carson High's wrestling team tuned up for next week's Sierra Nevada Classic with a 66-15 victory over Wooster in a Sierra League meet on Wednesday at Morse Burley Gym.

"There were only six contested matches," Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. "Wooster just doesn't have any numbers."

Carson won 11 of the 14 matches.

Colby Brown (145), Brady Rivera (160), Nico Garcia (182) and Javier Torres (195) all won by pin.

The two-day Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center starts Wednesday at 9 a.m.

"I'm hoping that we have Cole (McCarthy) and Cody (Cunningham) back for that meet," said coach McCarthy. "They go see ythe doctor today."

McCarthy, who wrestles at 126, injured his clavicle at last week's Tournament of Champions. Cunningham (152) injured his shoulder in his first-round match at the same meet.
