LAS VEGAS - Carson High's woes started before the team left for its annual trip to the Las Vegas Shootout, and continued through the first game Tuesday night.
Before the game started, first-year head coach Carlos Mendeguia learned that he would be without starting point guard Matt Nolan and starting forward/center Chance Quilling for the rest of the season for academic reasons.
Playing short-handed, Carson then went out and lost 55-35 to Canby-Oregon, a 6A school.
Carson returns to action today at 3 against Godinez Fundamental High School. The tournament concludes Thursday.
Mendeguia said the Senators shot the ball poorly and didn't handle the ball well, either. The Senators shot around 25 percent and had more than 20 turnovers.
Canby jumped out to an 8-0 lead and was never threatened.
"We had good looks, but nothing was falling," Mendeguia said.
The only Senator draining shots was Rafe King, who scored 20 points. Bruce McIntosh was next with five points.
