Community Sports briefly: Carson High seeks track officials, hosting clinic

A clinic for aspiring track & field officials has been scheduled for Feb. 5 at Carson High School.

The clinic will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and the clinic will be held in the classrooms next to the gym. The cost is $35 which includes current USATF, NCAA and NFHS rule books.

Carson track coach Robert Maw said no experience is needed to learn to officiate. With Carson hosting the 4A regionals this spring, Maw is looking for as many officials as possible to help run the meet. He's also looking for people to help with the Tah-Neva meet as well as two home high school meets.

There will be a morning and afternoon session, and you must attend both to be certified.

The morning session will cover track events an deal with philosophy, safety, preparation, track event clerking, starting, umpiring, marshaling and finish line organization. The afternoon session covers field events - shot put, discus, horizontal jumps and vertical jumps.

Silver Oak seeks golf members for tourneys

The Silver Oak Golf Men's Club is now accepting membership applications for 2011.

All tournaments will be on Sunday mornings at the Silver Oak Golf Course starting March 20 and continues with different tournament formats each week until Oct. 30.

Examples of various tournament formats will be individual stroke play, best ball, 3 club, scrambles and a Monthly Masters with the winner qualifying for the NNGA 6-Man Team at the end of the season.

There will be an awards banquet for all members following the final tournament date. The initial dues are $55, which includes membership into the NNGA and into the GHIN handicap service, which will be established for posting individual scores. A very special annual membership benefit includes a $35 greens fee 7 days a week.

Carson softball signups Feb. 5

The Carson Softball League is holding signups for the coming season on Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center gym, located at 851 E. William St.

Games start in April and run through early June. The cost is $55 per player for the season.

CVGC hosting Super Bowl tournament

The Carson Valley Golf Club in Gardnerville is hosting a golf tournament at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The $35 entry fee includes golf, cart, a $10 prize fund and a cup of chili. Teams will be drafted to represent the AFC & NFC.

Bass club sets meeting

Sierra Nevada Big Mouth Bass Club's monthly meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Round Table Pizza, located at 961 Topsy Lane.

Three tied for Highway 50 lead

Three teams - Just Bank It, O.G. Squeeze and Pocket Puppies - are tied for first place in the Highway 50 League in the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Bill Howard of VC Miners leads the 6-7 tier with 10 points, while Jennifer DeForest of Collateral Damage heads the 4-5 tier with nine points. Jerry Lehman of Pocket Puppies heads the 2-3 tier with 11 points.

Squeeze Play and The Spoke are tied for first in the Black Widow League with nine points each. Don Allred of Rack Busters leads the 6-7 tier with 11 points. Bradley Dabe of Squeeze Play and Jeremy Snodgrass of Scratch Masters are tied for first in the 4-5 tier with eight points each. Robert Bogue of Schmitt House leads the 2-3 tier with seven points.

In the Mosconi Division, AltF4 leads the way with 10 points, one better than Big Dogs and Unintentional Defense. Robert Haddix of Unintentional Defense leads the 6-7 tier with six points, while Robert Wilson of AltF4 heads the 4-5 tier with 10 points. Josiah Toldeo of Rack Fink heads the 2-3 tier with 11 points.

All Work & No Play has a commanding 39-point lead over Tied & Soldiered in the Comstock Division. Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine leads the 6-9 tier with 18 points, Jeff Cordova of All Work is on top in the 4-5 tier with 17 points and Joseph Ricard of Poke 'N' Hope and Caren Adkins of Tied & Soldiered are tied for first in the 1-3 tier with 12 points each.

Local swimmers are well in Minden

More than 350 swimmers showed up at the Carson Valley Swim Center for the Last Chance Meet which was held to give swimmers one last opportunity to qualify for this month's state meet at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Haylee Johnson, swimming the 100 individual medley for the first time, qualified for state. She also dropped her time in the 50 breaststroke en route to earning a state berth.

Other Tiger shark highlights:

200 free: Sophie Holmes dropped her time by four seconds in getting a state bonus qualifying time. Danielle Stanka dropped her time by two seconds and Tim Grunert dropped his time by 1.8 seconds.

200 breast: Erin Chang shaved four seconds off her previous state qualifying time.

100 butterfly: Eli Everest shaved five seconds off his previous best.

50 free: Grunert dropped a half-second off his best time.

500 free: Stanka dropped 19 seconds off her previous 500 time, going under six minutes for the first time.

200 IM: Everest dropped six seconds from his previous best.

Young scores ace

at Eagle Valley

Earnest Young, 51, recorded a hole-in-one on Jan. 26, using a 7-iron to ace the 150-yard par-3 4th at Eagle Valley-East. It was the first ace for Young.

Sierra Lutheran goes 1-2 last week

The Sierra Lutheran girls' basketball team knocked off South Tahoe's junior varsity team, 34-30, in Gardnerville Saturday night.

Tiffany Patrick led the Falcons with 18 points. Mariah West had seven points and Stephanie Nieri had four.

Earlier in the week, Sierra Lutheran fell 49-28 to Smith Valley and 55-21 to Hawthorne.

Patrick scored 13 points, had five blocks and four steals, Nieri had nine rebounds and Tynes had three assists in the loss to Smith Valley.

Patrick scored six points in the Hawthorne loss.

Eagle Valley grabs consolation title

Eagle Valley Middle School's eighth-grade volleyball team won the consolation title last weekend at the eight-team South Tahoe Optimist title.

Michelle Perry served three aces, had 10 kills, 16 digs and dished out 44 assists. Lindsay Hettrick finished with 11 aces, 14 kill, a block and six digs. Abbey Dudley had 15 aces, 11 kills, three blocks and three digs, while Chantal Torres had 10 aces, five kills and nine digs.

Earlier last week, Eagle Valley ran its league record to 7-0 with a 25-11 and 25-12 win. Perry had an ace and three kills, Dudley had three aces and four kills, Torres added six aces and two digs, and Hettrick served up five aces.

On Tuesday, the team beat South Tahoe 25-7 and 25-21.

Perry had seven points, four aces and two digs; Dudley had three points, an ace, three kills and two digs; LIndsay Hettrick had eight points and three aces; and Chantal Torres had five points and four aces.

The team is 8-0 in league and 12-2 overall.
