Obituary: Nevada June Hale-Byron

Nevada June Hale-Byron, 72, a beloved teacher, artist, wife and mother passed away at home on Jan. 13, 2011.

Born in Silver City on June 24, 1938, to Clarence and Vesta Haslett she was a Native Nevadan who had an incredible smile, personality, and many exceptional talents.

June, as many of her friends called her, worked her way through San Jose State College where she received her bachelor's degree in 1960. After working in California she decided to return to her beloved Northern Nevada and eventually went back to school and received her Master of Arts from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1968.

June began her teaching career in Reno for five years until taking a position with the Carson City School District. She taught mainly second grade for the next 25 years at Fritch then Fremont Elementary schools. Popular with her students and fellow teachers, she was highly professional and dedicated to her work yet had a personality that drew others to her. Many will miss her.

She also developed great skill as a professional artist. Working in either the oil or pastels mediums, June produced many fine works including the John C. Fremont portrait hanging in the State Legislature. Many other pieces are in residences in the U.S. and a few in Europe.

June married William Ringen in Reno in 1969. They were married until his death in 1980. Then in 1983, she married Kirk Hale-Byron in Carson City where they lived until her recent passing. He was with her as she passed away.

June was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where she served a deacon for a period of time.

Her life was highlighted by her family and friends of which there were many. Sisters Nadine, Marie and Nita held a special place in her life. Her son Scott was her great pride. Her friends were her spirit. Her dogs were a great joy for her.

June is survived by her husband Kirk of Carson City, son Scott of Sparks, sisters Marie Brown and Nita Lovett of Carson City, along with many nephews, nieces and other relatives. Sister Nadine Leffler of Yerington passed away five days after June's passing.

A memorial service celebrating June's life will beat 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Division and Telegraph streets, in Carson City.
