Richard E. (Dick) Corder passed away on Jan. 24, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Corder of Carson City; his daughter, Susan Binford of Hayward, Calif., and his son, Matthew Corder of Carson City. He was a caring grandfather and leaves behind four grandchildren, Sarah, James, Sierra and Michael, all of whom he loved dearly.

Dick was born May 19, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., grew up there and moved to New York during high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific during WWII. At the end of his Navy service he attended Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1950, and he later earned a master's degree in engineering administration from the University of Utah in 1967.

He married Joan Corder in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1955. Dick and Joan lived in Ohio, Utah, Pennsylvania and Virginia while raising their family and later retired to Carson City in 1994. He loved the landscape and lifestyle of the West, and the friendly people he got to know in Nevada.

Dick enjoyed taking long walks daily on the BLM land with his dogs. A lifelong animal lover, he adopted and cared for many stray pets. He was an avid sports fan, watching the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers every chance he got. (A Packers/Steelers Super Bowl would be his idea of a great game!) Dick spent his retirement years volunteering in the community, and at his church, St. Teresa of Avila in Carson City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at St. Teresa of Avila, 300 Lompa Lane, Carson City. Walton's Funerals and Cremations in Gardnerville is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends In Service Helping (F.I.S.H.) 138 E. Long St., Carson City, NV 89706.
