130 YEARS AGO

A few leaves from the Diary of Jimson Weed. Editor of the Appeal: Give the Orphans a Chance. A petition is being gotten up protesting against Assemblyman Drexler's bill to restrict the children of the State Orphan's Home to one meal a day. Even the most considerate of the humane Comstockers believe in giving the little ones two meals, with a piece of bread and butter for lunch.

100 YEARS AGO

Carson City came within a hair's breadth of losing it's distinction of being the state capitol the other day. The bill got before the house the other day and the vote stood at 20 to 20, and was thereby lost. Three members that favored the bill were absent, or it would have been passed. There has been a bill introduced to remove the state capitol every session for the past 10 years or more, more in the light of a joke upon Carson - simply to see the old lady "throw a fit." - Goldfield News.

70 YEARS AGO

Assemblyman Fred Phillips of the state prison committee reports overcrowding in the mess hall, hospital and kitchen. Sanitary conditions are very poor in respect to the bedding and beds. Phillips suggests younger inmates be separated in barracks at the prison farm.

50 YEARS AGO

4-H Leader Mrs. Stanley Doty teaches everything from cooking to etiquette in club classes. A leader for three years, Mrs. Doty became interested when her oldest daughter, Patty, started in the sewing club.

20 YEARS AGO

A contract employee collecting almost $90,000 a year salary and expenses with the state insurance division did not have his agreement renewed and has left the agency. The employee at the time was making more than Gov. Bob Miller.

10 YEARS AGO

Despite continuing opposition from Silver City volunteers, Lyon fire district officials are standing firm on pre-employment drug tests. "If you want to volunteer, you will be drug free," said Sue Lawson, Central Lyon County Fire District chairman.
