COMMUNITY SPORTS: Local clubs put on snowshoe event

The Tahoe Mountain Milers and Sagebrush Stompers running clubs are hosting the Fresh Tracks 5k Snowshoe Walk and Race Feb. 27 at Camp Richardson Resort.

The event benefits the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Scholarship Fund for the Heavenly Freestyle team.

The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Early registration deadline is Feb. 12 which is $30. It includes a T-shirt, snowshoe rental, post-race refreshments and continued day use of the facility. This year, the first 50 registrants will receive long-sleeve dry release t-shirts.

Day of race registration is $40.

RTO receives kudos from PGA Tour

The Reno-Tahoe Open is gearing up for its 13th year with strong reviews from the PGA Tour.

The RTO received strong marks for programs, including branding and collateral, operation services, family friendly and military inspired activities, and its Women's Day event last year which included Patty Sheehan and Annika Sorenstam.

"The 2010 Reno-Tahoe Open marked the beginning of a new era in the business of running professional golf tournaments in Northern Nevada," said Stephanie McNeill, director of business affairs for the PGA Tour. "The tournament began with a new date, a new executive director (Jana Smoley), a revamped sales group and a re-energized sales staff, all of which paid significant dividends."

The RTO placed second at the PGA Tour meetings in the special events category for its Women's Day presentation, which included a luncheon, fashion show and outdoor shopping expo.

Heavenly racers perform well in Tahoe Ski League

The Heavenly Ski Foundation athletes represented their team with valiant efforts across the board at a recent meet.

In the 7-8 girls category, Fiona Ritchie placed 17th and Kate Kassity finished 20th in their first Tahoe League competition, and Lexie Sutter skied to the 19th position.

In the boys 7-8 category, Ethan Kulchin led the pack with a 14th place finish while his fellow competitors M.J. Allen, Blake Sutter, and Aiden Rippet placed 17th , 25th, and 29th, respectively.

The 9-10 boys competed strongly with Grant Sutter finishing in fourth place, Lucas Kassity in 12th , Conner Funke 13th and Warren Martineau in 15th.

On a different part of the mountain, the older competitors displayed their giant slalom skills.

In the 11-12 boys category, Corey Huber was second, Trent Funke was ninth, Connor Huber 10th and Logan Langemeier 17th.

In the 13-14 girls group, Samantha Crawford had a fantastic first run, tying with another athlete for ninth place, but unfortunately lost a ski during her second run.

Brock Crawford finished strongly in fifth place in the boys 15 and above division.

The next scheduled Tahoe League Series races will take place on Saturday and Sunday at Sugar Bowl.

Scratch Masters hold slim lead

Scratch Masters has a 1-point lead over The Spoke in the Black Widow Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Don Allred leads the 6-7 tier with 16 points, 10 ahead of Juan Pina of Twisted Stix With Attitudes. Eric Dereng of Schmitt House leads the 4-5 tier with 12 points, one ahead of Scratch Masters' Jeremy Snodgrass. Robert Bogue of Schmitt House leads the 2-3 tier with 10 points, one ahead of Caren Adkins of The Spoke.

In the Highway 50 Division, Pocket Puppies leads by one point over Just Bank It and O.G. Squeeze.

Bill Howard of VC Miners leads the 6-7 tier with 10 points. Perry Levy and Clifford McCain. both of VC Miners, are running 1-2 in the 4-5 tier with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jerry Lehman of Pocket Puppies leads the 2-3 tier with 14 points and Kevin Jones of Just Bank It is next with 10.

Big Dogs, Role Models and Unintentional Defense are tied for first in the Mosconi Division with 13 points apiece.

Robert Haddix of Unintentional defense leads the 6-7 tier with 11 points, two ahead of Role Models' David Giovacchini. Josiah Toledo of Rack Fink leads the 4-5 tier with 16 points, four ahead of Jack Parish of Unintentional Defense. Robert Reed of Role Models leads the 2-3 tier with 10 points, while Jerrika Wendt of Jerry's Kids is second with seven.

All Work & No Play currently holds a 39-point lead over Tied & Soldiered in the Comstock Division.

Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine leads the 6-9 tier with 18 points, while Casey Richards of All Work and the Rattlers' Chris Wood are tied for second with 10. All Work teammates Jeff Cordova and Timothy Kane are 1-2 in the 4-5 tier with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Caren Adkins of Tied & Soldiered leads the 1-3 tier with 16 points, while Joseph Ricard of Poke 'N' Hope is next with 12.
