The Appeal very much regrets that its old friend Captain Sam, the Indian temperance advocate, has lately been detected sipping a glass of whiskey on the sly. For many years Captain Sam has been an earnest worker in the cause of total abstinence, and the wiley Indian never called at this office without enjoining the editor through his columns to abstain from the intoxicating bowl. To know the chief has fallen by the wayside will shake our long abiding faith in him.
100 YEARS AGO
Over in California that state is having a small-sized fit over the fact that Nevada seems to be in line to benefit from the waters of Lake Tahoe. California has acted the hog since the day Nevada uncovered a silver ledge inside the borders of the territory. She wanted all the silver. She took credit for every move to better the coast including taking all the millionaires. Now she wants water from our side of the hill.
70 YEARS AGO
Ski report at Spooner's Summit ski course: Three feet of pack, powder surface. Roads open, tow in operation. Today the forest service is installing a sign reading, "Spooner Summit Public Winter Sports Area.
50 YEARS AGO
Notice of the promotion of Maj. Addison A. Millard to the rank of Lt. Colonel was received this week from the Selective Service and released from the state director, Major General James A. May. Millard is a holder of the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry badge.
• Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
