Alice H. Hargrave, 102, a Carson City resident since 1983, passed away Feb. 9, 2011. She was born June 4, 1908, in Albany, N.Y., to Fred and Nellie Hills. Alice graduated from New York State Teachers College in 1929, and taught at Martin Van Buren High School in Kinderhook, N.Y. She married Dr. Frederic C. Hargrave Jr. on July 14, 1934. She moved to Pasadena, Calif., in 1939 and raised her family. In 1952 she returned to teaching. Alice taught at Wilson Jr. High School in Pasadena until her retirement in 1968. She was a life member of the California Retired Teacher's Association, and a member of the American Association of University Women, Docent Council of Nevada State Museum, and the Railroad Museum of Carson City, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. She is survived by her sons Roy of Carson City and David of Long Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, Nanci Campbell of Carson City, Phil Hargrave (Lisa) of Hood River, Ore., Erin (Larry) Hills of Fresno, Calif., Erik Hargrave (Amy) of Altadena, Calif., Lindsey Hargrave of Sun Valley, Calif., and Chelsea (Rod) Chapman of Burbank, Calif., and nine great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service for Alice at 3 p.m. Monday Feb. 14, 2011, at Mountain Springs Assisted Living, 2861 N. Mountain St. FitzHenry's Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for arrangements.
