SENATOR SQUARE: Science Olympiad team takes third

Carson High School took third place at the 2011 Northern Nevada Regional Science Olympiad Competition at UNR on Jan. 29.

Individual winners included:

First place: Optics - Brandon Buonacorsi and Tim Dotson; Astronomy - Brian Barnes and Andrew Jones; Experimental Design - Haley Toups, Ashley Salcedo, Victor Favro.

Second place: Forensics - Brandon Buonacorsi and Tim Dotson; Microbes - Brandon Buonacorsi and Jasmine Bean; Sumo Bots - Garrett Gingell; Sound of Music - Aldino Bracamontes and Kianna Jiron. Third place: Ecology - Jasmine Bean and Shruti Arun.

Third place: Experimental Design - Kate Schulz and Shruti Arun.

Congrats to the following students for places at the Damonte Ranch Speech and Debate tournament: Luis Becerra - fifth place senior expository, Edgar Casildo - fourth place senior dramatic interpretation, Darcy Clark - third place novice dramatic interpretation.

Edgar Casildo - third place senior Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Jenn Dodge - first place novice Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Carson HOSA wants to thank all of the elementary school students for their hard work at raising money for juvenile diabetes. Winners will be announced in the paper next week and a banner will be given to the school that raised the most money.

Carson High School has four finalists in the 2011 competition for National Merit Scholarships. Connie Duong, Sierra Jiron, Emma Kortemeier and Elizabeth Swezey will be receiving scholarship offers in March. We are very proud of these students and wish them the best of luck at the college of their choice.

Joshua Lynch and Kody Hollaway competed in the SkillsUSA Northern Regional Automotive Contest on Feb. 5 at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.

Twenty students from around Northern Nevada with automotive programs competed to move on to the State SkillsUSA Contest in March.

Joshua Lynch placed fourth and Kody Hollaway placed 10th. Only the top 10 students move on to state.

Great job, Joshua and Kody. Best of luck!

This week, CHS would like to spotlight senior Kristi Shaffer. Kristi is taking leadership and advanced-placement courses in literature, government, calculus and psychology. She maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.7. Kristi is the senior class vice president, is a member of National Honor Society and a member of The Invisible Children Club.

Throughout high school, she has participated in volleyball and varsity tennis. In addition, she works at the WNC Child Development Center. In the fall, Kristi plans to attend BYU Provo.

We are appreciative of all the time Kristi dedicates to her school, and are very proud of her accomplishments.

The Winterfest Spirit Week went really well last week. We want to thank each and every one of the students who participated and made the week one to remember!

Congratulations to Caitlin Sinclair for winning the Winterfest Queen crown, and Chris Alizaga for winning the Winterfest King crown.
