Community sports briefly: Youth swimmers to converge on Carson this weekend

The top youth swimmers in the state will converge on the Carson Aquatic Center for the annual state meet starting Friday at 2 p.m.

The event lasts four days. Action begins Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8:30 a.m., and there will be three sessions a day on the final three days. Admission is free, and there will be a snack bar available for food and drink.

Fifteen teams and unattached individual swimmers are entered in the event.

Gaby Phalan, the Tigersharks' head coach, said there will be small teams like Fernley with just three swimmers to huge teams like the Las Vegas Sandpipers (144 members) and Boulder City-Henderson, which will bring 149 swimmers.

"Obviously the team that wins will be the team with the most swimmers," Phalan said. "We have 37 swimmers entered, and I expect us to do real well. The kids have been working very hard. I expect them to have their best times."

Here is a rundown on some of Carson's top entrants:

Two of the top Carson swimmers are also members of the high school team, Tim Grunert and Abby Pittman. Grunert will participate in the 16-year-old division. He'll swim the breastroke, freestyle and individual medley, while Pittman excels in the 200, 500 and 1,550 freestyle events. Phalan said Pittman also may swim some breastroke.

Also in the 15-year-old group is Sophie Holmes, who will swim the breastroke, 200 free and 200 back.

In the 14-year-old group, Eli Everest and Charlee Bradley represent Carson. Everest specializes mostly in distance freestyle, while Bradley swims the 200 IM and backstroke events.

Kaly Branco and Kelsey Bradley are in the 11-12 age group. Branco will swim freestyle and backstroke events, while Bradley swims freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

In the 11-2 boys, Dagen Kipling will swim the breastroke and butterfly for Carson.

The 9-10 boys entrants are Brett Kolb, who mostly swims freestyle, and Jakob Clark, whose strength is the backstroke. Kaitlyn and Morgan Nelson will both be swimming in the 9-10 group. Phalan said both girls will swim a bunch of different events.

In the 8-and-under division, Carson will be represented by Haley Johnson, Gino Goggiano and Matteas Klatt.

Pairings set for

1A basketball

The Northern 1A boys and girls basketball playoffs will be held at both Wooster and Damonte Ranch high schools starting Thursday afternoon.

The Virginia City girls beat Coleville over the weekend to secure the No. 1 see in the girls' bracket. The Muckers will play Oyhee, the eastern 1A fourth seed Thursday at 4:30 at Virginia City. IF VC wins on Thursday, it will play the Hawthorne-Eureka winner Friday at 6:20 p.m.

In boys 1A, Virginia City is the No. 3 seed from the West and will play Owyhee, the No. 2 seed from the East at 3 p.m. at Wooster. IF VC wins, it would play either Hawthorne or Eureka Friday at 8 p.m.

The 1A finals will be on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.

Genoa Lakes looking

for women members

The Genoa Lakes Ladies Golf Club is inviting women golfers to join them in their 18th season of competition.

There are weekly events every Tuesday plus Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association tournaments. The season begins April 5.

Pocket Puppies in

the lead in pool

Pocket Puppies has a two-point lead over Just Bank It and O.G. Squeeze for first place in the Highway 50 Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Bill Howard of the VC Miners leads the 6-7 tier with 10 points. Perry Levy of VC Miners leads the 4-5 tier with 15 points, three ahead of Pocket Puppies' Gregory Theis. Jerry Lehman and Derek Sheldon, both of Pocket Puppies, are 1-2 in the 2-3 tier with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

In the Black Widow Division, there is a four-way tie for first between Scratch Masters, Squeeze Play, The Spoke and Twisted Stix With Attitudes. All have 15 points. Don Allred of Good Guys, Bad Guys leads the 6-7 tier with 22 points. Erice Dereng of Schmitt House leads the 4-5 tier with 18 points, while Kirsten Kehe of Twisted Stix, Robert Matteson of The Spoke and Jeremy Snodgrass of Scratch Masters are tied for second with 11. Caren Adkins of The Spoke, leads the 2-3 tier with 12 points, two ahead of Schmitt House's Robert Bogue.

Big Dogs and Unintentional Defense are tied for the Mosconi Division lead with 18 points apiece. Robert Haddix of Unintentional Defense leads the 6-7 tier with 17 points. Jack Parish of Unintentional Defense and Josiah Toledo of Rack Fink are tied for first in the 4-5 tier with 16 points. Robert Reed of Role Models leads the 2-3 tier with 10 points.

All Work & No Play leads the Comstock Division by 20 points over Tied & Soldiered. Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine has a whopping 12-point lead over Casey Richards of All Work & No Play and Chris Wood of the Rattlers. Jeff Cordova and Timothy Kane, both of All Work & No Play are holding down the top two spots in the 4-5 tier with 21 and 18 points respectively. Caren Adkins and Greg Munoz, both of Tied & Soldiered hold the top spots in the 1-3 tier with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Carson football boosters select new board members

John Siembida has been selected as the president for the 2011-12 school year.

Kelly Kiesow is the new vice president, Karen Barr Walters is the treasurer and Sandra Perez is the secretary.

The next board meeting is March 7 at the Straw Hat Pizza, located on Highway 50. Meetings are held on the first Monday of every month.

Dayton men's club

has openings

The Dayton Valley Palmer Club, the men's golf club at Dayton Valley Golf Club, is open to public membership with a new structure for the 2011 season.

Any area male golfer age 18 or older can join by paying annual dues of $250. Dues for members who have a NNGA handicap at another club are $220.

The dues fee includes NNGA/GHIN number and handicap and entry into 10 tournaments including a Skins Game, Club Championship and two-day Member-Member tournament with four 9-hole formats. Palmer Club members also receive a discounted green fee on tournament days.

The season begins on Sat., March 19 with a 4 Man Green Ball/Scramble tournament.

Eagle Valley eighth graders win title

The Eagle Valley Middle School eighth grade volleyball team won the Tah-Neva Volleyball Championship last Friday.

This is the second consecutive year that EVMS has won the Championship.

EV defeated South Tahoe, 25-16 and 25-11 in the opening match.

They then beat Carson Middle School 28-26, 25-27 and 15-9 to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game EV defeated Carson Middle School 18-25, 25-14 and 15-9.

Tournament stand-outs were: Michelle Perry had 19 points, four aces, 11 kills, 20 assists and nine digs; Abbey Dudley had 25 points, 10 aces, four kills and nine digs; Lindsay Hettrick had 24 points, eight aces, seven kills and nine digs; Bailie Zuber had five kills, six blocks and five digs; Chantal Torres had 11 points and 12 digs; and Erica Gallegos had 12 points, two aces and three digs.

Eagle Valley finished 9-1 in league and 17-3 overall.

EV spikers win

consolation trophy

Eagle Valley's seventh grade volleyball team went 2-1 in the recent TahNeva Tournament.

Eagle Valley lost to Incline Middle School 25-15 and 25-20, and then bounced back to beat Carson Middle 25-22 and 27-25. EV concluded the tourney with a 25-14 and 25-16 win over North Tahoe.

Coached by Kelly Hazard, EV won eight games this season.
