U.S. Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., has been named to the Ways and Means subcommittee on health.

That subcommittee is responsible for legislation concerning health care, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and unemployment security.

In addition, he will remain a member of the subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, the subcommittee of Ways and Means that writes tax legislation for the House of Representatives.

Those are Heller's only two assignments since House rules prohibit members of Ways and Means from having other committee assignments.

"Americans want a health care system that works for them," he said, adding that the current law doesn't provide the solutions people are asking for.

"This measure was full of political buyoffs and special deals that benefit a select few while the majority of Ameri-cans will see higher taxes and higher health care costs."

He called for "market-based solutions" to health care problems.

Heller is beginning his third two-year term representing Nevada's second congressional district. That district encompasses northern, rural and western Nevada.
