Community sports briefly: Carson High grad finishes third at Freeski World Tour event

Carson High graduate Spencer Brinson finished third at the Freeski World Tour event recently.

Brinson finished behind fellow Americans Lars Chickering Ayers and Drew Tabke. Another American, Connery Lundin, finished fourth.

On the women's side, Sara Rose Mancuso of Squaw Valley took seventh place.

WNC hosts fundraiser in Reno on Saturday

Western Nevada College will host an evening of dinner and baseball lore on Saturday, at the Peppermill Hotel-Casino, Reno.

This year's annual fundraiser for WNC will feature Los Angeles Angels pitcher Kevin Jepsen. Jepsen, a Bishop Manogue High School graduate, is a right-handed reliever and a member of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The event includes a three-course dinner, hosted beer and wine, raffle, and both live and silent auctions. Tickets cost $100 each or $1,000 for a table of 10.

This year, participants also have the option to help support a Nevada high school baseball or softball program by attending the fundraiser. Fifty percent of their net ticket proceeds ($15) may be directed to the Nevada high school softball or baseball team of their choice.

Empire Ranch hosting women's golf league

A women's golf league is being formed at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

Weekly tournaments start in April and run through October. By joining you will get a Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association membership, a USGA handicap and tournament buffets and lunch specials.

Knights free throw contest set

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is set for Jan. 22 at Carson Middle School.

Boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14 are eligible to compete. Action gets started at 9:30 a.m.

Carson Valley softball signups slated

The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association has scheduled signups for the 2011 season at the Gardnerville fire station.

There are currently four sign-up dates scheduled.

The first is set for Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The second session is Feb. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. The third sign-up is Feb. 16, also from 6 to 8 p.m. The final sign-up is Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fees are $65 for ages 4 through 7 and $70 for players 8 and older. The family rate is $150.

The group is offering a $10 discount for all players who sign up on Jan. 22.

New players must bring birth certificates upon registering. Returning players should bring a completed registration if you received one in the mail.

The league is open to players 4 through 18.

Close battle in Comstock pool

Tied & Soldiered leads Twisted Stix With Attitudes by three points in the Comstock Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Casey Richards of All Work & No Play leads the 6-9 tier with six points, while Chris Woods of Rattlers has five points. Roger Alther of Scratch Masters leads the

4-5 tier with six points, while Timothy Ocheltree II and Phil O'Sullivan of Dean's Machine are tied for second with five each. In the 1-3 tier there is a four-way tie for first between Jerry O'Dell of Rack Busters, Greg Munoz of Tied & Soldiered, Kenneth Collins of Big Dogs and Rochelle Pabst of Tied & Soldiered. All have four points.

In the Mosconi Division, Jerry's Kids is in first with 63 points, one ahead of Role Models.

David Giovacchini of Jerry's Kids leads the 6-7 tier with 41 points, while Juan Pina of Twisted Stix is second with 40. Mike Snoddy of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 4-5 tier with 53 points and Eric Richards of Support Rackless Habits is second at 43. Janice Cameron leads the 2-3 tier with 48 points and Josiah Toledo is second with 41.
