Top 25 Capsules: Duke bounces back from loss

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Nolan Smith scored 29 points and No. 1 Duke bounced back from its first loss in 10 months by pulling away to beat Virginia 76-60 on Saturday.

Andre Dawkins added 12 of his 14 points after halftime, Kyle Singler finished with 13 points and Mason Plumlee had a career-high 16 rebounds for the slow-starting Blue Devils (16-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

They trailed by 10 late in the first half but outscored Virginia 43-18 over the final 16 minutes and shot nearly 47 percent to avoid their first losing streak in two years.

Mustapha Farrakhan and Joe Harris scored 15 points each for the Cavaliers (10-7, 1-2). They were held to one field goal during a late 8-minute stretch and fell to 1-28 against top-ranked teams.

No. 2 Ohio State 69, Penn State 66

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Freshman forward Jared Sullinger scored 19 points and converted a three-point play with 13.2 seconds left to lift Ohio State over Penn State.

The victory, on the heels of top-ranked Duke's 66-61 loss at Florida State on Wednesday night, could propel the Buckeyes (18-0, 5-0 Big Ten) to the No. 1 spot in next week's rankings.

Fellow freshman Aaron Craft also had 19 points, a career high, to go with seven assists and brilliant defense against Penn State (10-7, 3-3) star Talor Battle.

Battle's 3-pointer with 2 seconds left came up short.

David Jackson had 19 points for the Nittany Lions, who were trying to upset three straight ranked teams for the first time in school history.

No. 3 Kansas 63, Nebraska 60

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Marcus Morris and Tyrel Reed hit free throws in the final seconds, and Kansas rallied to remain unbeaten.

Kansas entered with a 15-game winning streak against the Huskers, but was thoroughly outplayed in a ragged first half and fell behind by 10 points quickly after intermission.

Morris' two foul shots gave the Jayhawks (17-0, 2-0 Big 12) a 62-58 lead. After Lance Jeter drove in for a layup, Reed was quickly fouled and made one of two.

Jeter then missed a 3-pointer for Nebraska, which outrebounded Kansas 44-31.

Reed and Marcus Morris each had 16 points as Kansas ran its school-record home court winning streak to 69 games.

Jeter had 13 points for Nebraska (13-4, 1-2) and Andre Almeida had 10.

No. 4 Syracuse 67, No. 25 Cincinnati 52

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Rick Jackson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season, leading Syracuse to the victory.

Syracuse (18-0, 5-0 Big East) is one win from matching the best start in program history. The Orange play at No. 5 Pittsburgh on Monday night.

Syracuse broke open a tight game with a 16-0 run to start the second half. Freshman center Fab Melo had four points and Brandon Triche and James Southerland each hit 3-pointers to key the game-changing charge.

Cincinnati hit 9 of 19 3-pointers in the first half to rally from an early 15-point deficit but missed its first seven shots of the second to fall behind by 20 points with 14:07 left.

Dion Dixon led Cincinnati (16-2, 3-2) with 18 points, all on 3s.

No. 5 Pittsburgh 74, Seton Hall 53

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Senior center Gary McGhee matched a career high with 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, sending Pittsburgh to a victory over struggling Seton Hall.

Despite missing two-thirds of its shots through the first 15 minutes, the Panthers (17-1, 5-0 Big East) cruised to a double-digit lead and maintained control the rest of the way. Playing before 9,236 at the Petersen Events Center, they won their seventh consecutive game and 19th in a row at home.

Pitt also matched its best start in Big East play, achieved three previous times in its 29-year conference history.

It was the fourth loss in five games for Seton Hall (8-10, 2-4), which has dropped six of eight overall.

Pitt, which has tied the sixth-best start in the program's 103 years, next plays host Monday to No. 4 Syracuse in a Big East battle for first place.

No. 6 San Diego State 87, New Mexico 77

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - D.J. Gay scored a career-high 30 points, Kawhi Leonard had 19 points and 15 rebounds and San Diego State beat New Mexico to remain one of the nation's four unbeaten teams.

Chase Tapley added 15 points and the Aztecs (19-0, 4-0 Mountain West Conference) won for the fourth time in their last six visits to The Pit to extend the country's longest active win streak to a school-record 19 games.

The Lobos (13-5, 1-2) got a strong performance from UCLA transfer Drew Gordon, who had a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds in his ninth game since becoming eligible last month. But it wasn't enough, as the Aztecs snapped New Mexico's 16-game home winning streak.

No. 7 Villanova 74, Maryland 66

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Corey Fisher scored eight of his 17 points during a 19-0 run and Villanova earned its 11th straight win.

The Wildcats (16-1) trailed by 12 midway through the second half and could not make a shot against one of the top defensive teams in the nation.

Jordan Williams had 25 points and 14 rebounds to give the Terps (11-6) a shot at the signature win against a Top 25 team that they've been craving.

Fisher snatched it from them and sent the Wildcats streaking into Monday's Big East showdown at Connecticut. Fisher hit a pair of 3s during the spurt and sent the crowd at their off-campus NBA home into a frenzy.

No. 10 Connecticut 82, DePaul 62

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 22 of his 31 points in the first half, Jeremy Lamb added 13 and Connecticut handed DePaul its 18th straight loss in Big East play.

The 31 points matched Walker's career high in conference play, and he also had five assists and three steals. Alex Oriakhi had 11 points for the Huskies (14-2, 3-2), who never trailed in winning their fourth straight against DePaul.

Cleveland Melvin, who verbally committed to UConn before changing his mind, had a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Demons (6-11, 0-5). It was the fifth straight loss for DePaul, which has gone almost a year since its last Big East win. The Blue Demons beat Marquette 51-50 on Jan. 20, 2010.

No. 12 Texas 66, Oklahoma 46

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Jordan Hamilton scored 17 points and Texas sent rival Oklahoma to an 0-3 start in the Big 12.

Freshman forward Tristan Thompson added 15 points and eight rebounds. His 11 points in the second half sparked the run that put the game away for Texas (14-3, 2-0 Big 12).

Andrew Fitzgerald scored 18 for the Sooners (8-9), who are 0-8 away from home this season and showed little chance of ending that streak in a game in which they never led. Oklahoma shot just 1 of 15 from 3-point range.

Gary Johnson scored 14 points for the Longhorns, who held Oklahoma to its lowest point total of the season.

No. 13 Kentucky 82, LSU 44

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Brandon Knight scored 19 points, Terrence Jones added 17 in his second game coming off the bench and Kentucky rolled past LSU.

The Wildcats (14-3, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) held the Tigers to a season-low 26 percent shooting, forced 15 turnovers and never let up while handing LSU (10-8, 2-1) its worst loss of the season

Garrett Green led the Tigers with 13 points but LSU was never in it. Kentucky needed less than 8 minutes to move in front by double digits on the way to its second straight win following a loss to Georgia last weekend.

No. 14 Texas A&M 91, No. 15 Missouri 89 OT

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Khris Middleton scored 28 points, including 11 in overtime, and Texas A&M picked up its 13th straight win.

The Aggies (16-1, 3-0 Big 12) trailed by one before Middleton swiped the ball from Marcus Denmon and converted a layup with 34 seconds remaining.

Middleton made three free throws to extend the lead to 91-87, and Missouri's Laurence Bowers had a tip-in at the buzzer for the final margin.

Middleton sank a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation for his first points of the second half, tying it at 77. The Tigers had a chance for the win, but Phil Pressey missed a jumper in the lane.

Denmon and Ricardo Ratliffe had 19 points apiece for Missouri (15-3, 1-2), which has lost seven straight to Texas A&M.

No. 20 Wisconsin 76, No. 16 Illinois 66

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Jon Leuer scored 26 points and hit a critical 3-pointer down the stretch, powering Wisconsin to the victory.

Jordan Taylor added 22 for the Badgers (13-4, 3-2 Big Ten), who rebounded from an overtime loss at Michigan State.

Leuer wasn't the only Wisconsin big man who showed he could shoot from outside. Keaton Nankivil scored 14, including three 3-pointers in the second half.

Demetri McCamey scored 23 and Brandon Paul added 15 for the Illini (13-5, 3-2), who have lost two straight after beginning conference play 3-0.

Wisconsin evened the season series with the Illini, who beat the Badgers 69-61 on Jan. 2.

No. 18 Louisville 71, Marquette 70

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kyle Kuric's layup with 4 seconds remaining capped a furious rally by the Cardinals.

Louisville (14-3, 3-1 Big East) trailed by 18 with less than 6 minutes to go but closed the game on a 24-5 run fueled by guard Preston Knowles. The senior guard finished with 17 points and drew three Marquette defenders on Louisville's final possession before finding Kuric wide-open under the basket.

Marquette (12-6, 3-2) had one final shot, but Jimmy Butler's runner in the lane glanced off the rim as the horn sounded.

Darius Johnson-Odom led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and Butler had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Duquesne 78, No. 19 Temple 66

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bill Clark had 22 points and Duquesne limited Temple to 31 percent shooting while earning its sixth consecutive victory.

Duquesne (11-5, 3-0 Atlantic 10) scored the game's first 10 points and held leads of 19-1 and 22-2 after making its first five shots - four from 3-point range. The Owls missed their first 14 shots and didn't record their first field goal until the 8:18 mark of the first half.

Duquesne held an opponent without a field goal for a stretch of more than 11 minutes for the second consecutive game. Saint Louis went 14:01 without a basket in a 67-45 Dukes' win on Wednesday.

Ramone Moore had 18 points for the Owls (12-4, 3-1), who had won nine of their previous 10.

No. 21 Kansas State 94, Texas Tech 60

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Jamar Samuels scored 22 points and Jacob Pullen added 21 to help Kansas State get the win.

Rodney McGruder added 16 points and Curtis Kelly had 12 for the Wildcats (13-5, 1-2 Big 12).

John Roberson scored 19 for Texas Tech (8-10, 0-3) and Brad Reese added 11. The Red Raiders have lost their three Big 12 games by a combined 77 points, with two of those losses coming at home.

Kelly was playing his first game after serving a six-game suspension for violating NCAA rules by taking improper benefits at a Manhattan department store.

But the Wildcats were without junior center Freddy Asprilla, who left the team, a decision announced shortly before game time. The 6-foot-10 Asprilla, who started 13 games, averaged 4.9 points and 4.9 rebounds.

No. 22 Georgetown 74, Rutgers 65

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Austin Freeman scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half and Georgetown snapped a three-game losing streak.

Freeman, the Big East preseason player of the year, returned to form for the Hoyas (13-5, 2-4), who came in 1-4 in the conference, their worst start in 12 years.

The streak ended with Freeman finally having the type of game expected from the senior guard. After scoring a total of 29 points on 10-of-31 shooting in the three losses, Freeman was 6 of 12 from the field, more in line with his 53.7 percent shooting for the season, including going 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

Gilvydas Biruta had 14 points for the Scarlet Knights (10-7, 1-4), who lost for the fifth time in six games.

Southern Miss 86, No. 23 Central Florida 69

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - R.L. Horton scored 18 points, D.J. Newbill added 17 and Southern Mississippi beat Central Florida for its first win over a ranked team since 2004.

Gary Flowers and Maurice Bolden each had 16 points for the Golden Eagles (14-3, 3-1 Conference USA), who used a 21-2 run midway through the second half to turn a four-point deficit into a 68-53 lead.

It was the biggest victory for Southern Miss coach Larry Eustachy during his seven-year tenure. The Golden Eagles hadn't beaten a ranked team at Reed Green Coliseum since 1986.

UCF (14-2, 1-2) has lost two in a row after starting the season on a school-record 14-game winning streak. The Knights, who earned the first national ranking in program history on Dec. 20, will likely fall out of the polls.

Marcus Jordan, the son of NBA great Michael Jordan, had 20 points for UCF.

No. 24 Georgia 98, Mississippi 76

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Gerald Robinson scored a season-high 22 points and Georgia put five players in double figures against Mississippi.

Trey Thompkins had 21 points, Travis Leslie added 17, Dustin Ware 15 and Jeremy Price 12 for Georgia (13-3, 2-1 Southeastern Conference), which bounced back from a loss at Vanderbilt that snapped a nine-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs shot a season-best 64 percent (33 of 52) from the field. At the free throw line, they were 26 of 27. Georgia also dominated the boards, 32-21, and had only seven turnovers.

Zach Graham led Ole Miss (12-6, 0-3) with 21 points, but the Rebels have lost three straight. Leading scorer Chris Warren was limited to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.
