Picture of teams in paper meant a lot to kids

To the Nevada Appeal: I would like to start by saying thank you for posting the pictures of my athletic teams in your newspaper. The kids truly deserve a spot in the limelight for their achievement, and you have made this possible.

To some, this act of kindness means nothing, but in the eyes of our children this act is everything. The article posted of our children and their achievement will last a lifetime. Not only will the article last a lifetime but will also be a memory that our children will be able to share with their family, friends children and grandchildren.

With all the negative activity going on in the world today, it's a blessing that workers of the Nevada Appeal are going the extra mile to recognize our children for the positives that they are doing. You are really making a difference.

State workers shouldn't bear unfair burden

Hey, governor, I see you did not do anything different than anyone before you. You picked on those least able to defend themselves. Why don't you talk to some of these front-line employees in the different agencies and ask them what sacred cows could best be cut from a budget?

I know, when talking about cutting waste, one shudders at the repercussions from the good ole boys when you start messing around with any of their special deals. Come on, get in there and dig, don't take the easy way out by beating the backs of those who keep this whole thing running. I could have done that, and I'm not very smart. I expect more from my governor.

I wish you well, and I want to see you be successful during your time in office.

Information on Social Security came from AARP

The Social Security facts I quoted in my Dec. 26 letter were not my opinion. They were a direct quote from the December 2010 AARP bulletin. The article was on page 21 and was "25 top questions and answers on Social Security."

Any disagreements would be with AARP. Since I wrote the letter, AARP has stated, and I quote, "Cutting Social Security will adversely affect tens of millions of Americans. For over 70 years, Social Security has been a self-financed program and has accumulated surpluses of $2.5 trillion. It has not contributed one cent to the current deficit. Meanwhile, millions of Americans who have spent their entire careers paying into Social Security deserve the benefits they have earned."

I trust and rely on AARP to find the facts and inform us. They lobby on our behalf in Washington. I have written Sen. Reid and President Obama, and have signed petitions for Ensign, Heller and Reid.

If controversy is stirred up along the way, good. Maybe we will find some truths.
