A 40-year-old Carson City man is behind bars after he allegedly told his GED instructor at Western Nevada College that he was, "going to come shoot up the place like the guy in Arizona" because he did poorly on an entry exam.
Ismael Segura-Hernandez allegedly made those comments at 5:30 p.m. Monday inside a classroom during an orientation for the college's GED program.
His instructor at WNC feared Segura-Hernandez was referring to the 22-year-old man who shot and killed six people and injured 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, on Jan. 8 in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson, Ariz., according to the police report.
Segura-Hernandez allegedly made the comments after the instructor graded his orientation exam, which he had answered 10 of the 12 questions wrong. According to the police report, Segura-Hernandez began to throw his arms in the air and allegedly told the instructor he would, "get a gun and shoot me and all of us."
Segura-Hernandez said he was just joking, but the instructor told him that was not funny. When she told him the GED program would take about two years to complete, Segura-Hernandez became irritated and left the room.
He was arrested on Wednesday after campus officials met on Tuesday, alerted the Carson City Sheriff's Office and agreed to ban him from the campus, said Anne Hansen, a spokeswoman for WNC. She said Segura-Hernandez had been a part-time student at WNC, but could not comment on whether he had been reported for strange behavior before or what classes he had taken.
Hansen said students were alerted about the incident Tuesday on WNC's public safety website.
Deputies also reported that during the orientation, the instructor said Segura-Hernandez mentioned he had taken anger management classes and allegedly said, "every time he comes to Carson City, we should do it the way they do it in Arizona."
Deputies caught up with Segura-Hernandez at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday on the 2900 block of Menlo Drive.
He allegedly said he figured they had come for him because of what he had allegedly said up at the college, adding, "I did not mean it like that."
Segura-Hernandez told deputies that when he failed the test he asked the instructor if she thought he was, "going to come shoot up the place like that guy in Arizona."
On Wednesday, Segura-Hernandez was arrested at about 1 p.m. on the 2900 block of Menlo Drive on suspicion of making terrorist threats, a felony, and misdemeanor disturbance of a school.
During an interview with detectives, Segura-Hernandez allegedly admitted several times that he had stated in front of the class and instructors that because of his poor performance on the test he had said, "you guys are going to make me like the guy in Arizona who comes back and shoots everyone."
Bail was set at $25,000.
