Obituary: Charles Douglas Jones

Fish Springs pioneer Charles (Chuck) Jones, 93, died June 27, 2011, in Carson City. He was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Sylvester Walter Jones and Martha Marie Hugg. He was a military police officer during World War II, with the rank of sergeant. A welder by trade he worked in the shipyards, and later Aero Jet General, rocket to the moon project. An avid horseman he owned a stable at Kings Beach, Calif., belonged to the El Dorado Sheriff's Posse Search and Rescue and was an endurance rider. Mr. Jones owned Belgian draft horses, which he pulled in the Carson Valley Days parade. He square danced, restored tractors and drove snow removal trucks for Cal Trans. He homesteaded in Fish Springs and moved to Nevada in 1963. He built three homes, drilled wells and loved to tell stories of his many experiences. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bartels Jones of Gardnerville; sisters Marnetta Gray and Delores Terry of California; stepchildren John K. (Kathy) Bartels, Derek E. Bartels of Yerington, Kent W. Bartels of California, Marvie L. Womack of Gardnerville and Catherine L. (Donn) Wold of Georgia, and several

nieces and nephews. He is also survived by stepchildren from a previous marriage to Anita Jones; Donald (Maude) Watkins of Arizona, Charles (Hedy) Watkins of Nevada, Suzanne (Roy) McMillan of California and 'adopted' son Gary (Rose Mary) Johnson of Gardnerville.
