The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: Carson City's taxable sales required a double take when they were released Monday morning. The double take was required, because sales skyrocketed 30 percent in April over 2010. The major increase was because of a $16 million one-time sale of cell phone equipment, said Carson City Finance Director Nick Providenti. General merchandise in the Capital City also was up 9.2 percent. Statewide, sales were up 2.3 percent. All of these numbers are yet more signs that Nevada's economy is starting to rebound.
SILVER DOLLAR: On Monday, the skies of Carson City will be alight with fireworks, thanks to the help of several Carson businesses. The 19th annual Retired and Senior Volunteer Program carnival and fireworks show at Mills Park make Carson a showcase for the Fourth of July celebration in Western Nevada.

SILVER DOLLAR: Carson City Supervisor Karen Abowd said in the cheers and kudos section last Sunday that it took a village to make the Carson City beautification project possible. She couldn't be more right. More than 40 business and community members contributed to make the streets of downtown Carson City colorful by sponsoring flower baskets that are the cherry on top of Carson City during the summer.
