The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada wrapped up its spring fundraising season on Friday. Although falling short of the $100,000 goal, executive director Hal Hansen said he was pleased with the support from the community.
"Overall, our number of donors has maintained a steady increase," he said. "Amounts have gone down a little, but that's understandable."
Dick Campagni, owner of Carson City Toyota and Scion and Capital Ford, gives the annual Giving Campaign a boost by matching the first $10,000 from first-time donors or those giving more than they did previously.
"The reason I do it is because I think it's a great cause for the kids," Campagni has said. "I believe in it."
Hansen said two private donors, who preferred to remain unnamed, gave enough to reach the $10,000 challenge within the first two weeks, Hansen said.
On top of the $10,000 match from Campagni, Bank of America also donated $10,000.
Hansen said the donations are crucial to operating the club.
"We're seeing more kids than ever," he said.
"Obviously, with these times there are a lot of people in need. We don't charge very high fees. In order for us to keep our doors open, we rely heavily on grants and donations."
The club's next fundraiser will come in September with the annual Kids Auction and Barbecue.
With foundations suffering as well, he said, donations from individuals and businesses is essential, and he appreciates the community's support.
"People still want to support us, even if they can't do it to the same level," he said. "They still believe in what we do."
