Crews make progress on fire in northern Nevada

WADSWORTH (AP) - Fire officials reported progress Sunday in their battle against an 11,154-acre wildfire in northern Nevada.

Spokeswoman Helen Frazier said the fire near the tiny town of Wadsworth, about 30 miles east of Reno, was expected to be fully contained sometime Monday. No injuries were reported.

She said while the blaze came within four miles of Wadsworth, there was a diminishing threat to structures in the town located along Interstate 80 near Fernley.

The fire, which broke out Saturday north of Wadsworth, was burning grass and brush in valleys and ranges largely managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management.

Down-slope winds earlier were pushing the fire to the south toward Wadsworth. More than 200 firefighters were battling the fire with the help of five air tankers and one helicopter.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Meanwhile, crews fully contained a 15-acre wildfire on the southeast slopes of Peavine Mountain just above Reno. The cause of that brush fire, which broke out Saturday night, also is under investigation.
