COMMUNITY SPORTS BRIEFLY: WNC baseball team honored for academic performance

Western Nevada College's baseball team has been named one of the top academic teams in the country, earning All-Academic Team honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

The Wildcats finished the spring semester with a 3.16 team GPA. Three players - Brooks Klein, Pat McMeel and Sean Dwyer - earned individual academic awards. Klein posted a 3.98 GPA, while Dwyer was at 3.97 and McMeel at 3.78.

"Our sophomores are very deserving of their awards," coach D.J. Whittemore said. "They also deserve credit for setting the tone for a team-wide emphasis on academic excellence.

"Earning academic all-American status is the pinnacle of success for our team. This is truly a team effort as very single player's academic record is taken into the equation. It is something we take a great deal of pride in each year."

Tahoe volleyball camps bring

Tahoe Volleyball Camps next week will bring in a staff of college coaches to Tahoe City. The list of college coaches includes Mike Welch, Burt Fuller, Lisa Griffiths, Jody Garry, Kim Lester, Jamie Ivers and Rob Holley.

Camp dates include:

• July 11-13 Peak Volleyball Camp is a fundamental skills camp at North Tahoe High School for youth girls and boys

• July 14-16 Peak Position Volleyball Camp is an advanced camp at North Tahoe High School for youth girls and boys

• July 22-24 Lakefront Outdoor Volleyball Clinic at Pomin Park. This camp is open to both youth and adults, and includes participation in the July 24 Grass Volleyball Tournament.

Union Bruisers lead Highway 50 Division

The Union Bruisers have a 30-29 lead over O.G. Squeeze in the Highway 50 Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Casey Richards has a 13-8 lead over Bill Howard in the high tier, while Michael Hoopes has a 20-18 lead over Richard Jenson. Scott Dorey and Joseph Sbragia are tied for the lead in the low tier with 18 points each.

In the Comstock Division, 9-Spoke has a 400-367 lead over Tied & Soldiered.

Kenneth Gabbard has a 9-5 lead over Juan Pina in the high tier, while Jeff Cordova leads Laura McCuiston 21-16 in the middle tier. Lawrence Gloistein has a 22-15 lead over Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes in the low tier.

In the Mosconi Division, the Spoke and Squeeze Play are tied at 21.

Robert Haddix leads Juan Pina 18-17 in the high tier, Caren Adkins, Kim Dando and William Grasberger are tied for the middle tier lead with 16 points and Joshua Bice, Bob King and Gloria Rodriguez are tied for the low tier lead with 12 points.

Muth, Gottschalk team up for win

Jim Muth and Keith Gottschalk teamed up for a 62 to win the Thunder Canyon Men's Club 4-ball event on July 1.

Jim Fitzpatrick and Saul Singer tied with Ray Badger and Mitch Watts for second. Both teams were at 63. Randy Plymell and Ron Babey were fourth at 65.

Becky Martinelli won the Women's Club Best 9 Front/Back tournament with a 34. Kathy Cockerill was second with a 35 while Claudia Goodnight and Jeanne Brennan tied for third with a 36.

In another tourney at Thunder Canyon, Randy Plymell, Barbara Plymell, Darrin Plymell and Brian Sear combined for a 111 to win the best two ball Shamble event.

Finishing second at 117 were Bob and Nancy Gates, and Steve and Kathy Archer. Third place went to Greg and Becky Martinelli, and Jack and Virginia Bonar with a 120.

Coons, Ludington, Causton triumph

Russ Coons shot a net 61 to win Flight A at the Red, White & Blue Tournament Sunday at Carson Valley Golf Club.

John Murray was second with a 65 and Marc Prause was third with a 67.

Brick Ludington won Flight B with a 65, while Gary Carsten and Joe Morrison tied for second with a 66. Bill Causten won Flight C with a 66. Al Goldberg and Paul Finan tied for second with a 67.

Moss, Wicker, Best win at Silver Oak

Al Moss shot a net 67 to win Flight 1 at the Silver Oak Senior Men's Club Individual Stroke Play Tournament.

Don Fox, Jim Pursel and Tom Abbett tied for second with 69s. Bob Wicker won Flight 2 with a net 62. Rudy Hammond and Vern Rosse tied for second with 65s. Luther Best won Flight 3 with a 63 while Roland Owings and Walter Ratchford tie for second with 64s.

Sosa qualifies for track nationals

Blanca Sosa, 12, qualified for three events at the upcoming National AAU Junior Olympic Champion-ships later this month.

Sosa qualified at Reed High School. She took first in the 3,000-meter event (12:32), took second in the 1500 (5:49) and was third in the 800 (2:49).

Sosa competed in the 12-year-old Midget Division.

Maricich wins Cup title at Silver Oak

Frank Maricich won an 18-hole four-way playoff to win the President's Cup at Silver Oak Golf Club.

Maricich, Marc Garcia, Mike Gaynor and Jeff Cloutier all tied with a net 59. The other three golfers won $90.

Freeman Johnson, Kevin Johnson, William Kapczynski, Kyle Menath and Chuck Spencer tied for fifth with net 60s. Mark Cox was 10th with a 61.

In the Monthly Masters event, James Shabi shot 64 to win the first flight, while Maricich, Jim Fleming, Manny Lopez, Gary Nitzberg and Rocky Koch tied for first in the second flight with 68s.

Weller team wins scramble at E.V.

The team of Paul Weller, Frank Romano and Robert Blom (and bogey) shot a net 46 to win the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club 4-man scramble on June 29 at Eagle Valley West.

Nils Sharpe, Phil Polaske, Mike Rogers and Roger Maxwell were second with a 50. Ray McPartlin, Don Becker, Bob Warzynski and Wes Franklin were next at 51.

Hughes, Greenman score aces at T.C.

Tina Hughes aced the 133-yard sixth hole at Thunder Canyon on June 30th. She used a driver.

Larry Greenman aced No. 17, a 174-yard par-3 using a 7-iron.
