Carson will have a

void when longtime resident moves away

I just read the heartwarming article in the Appeal by Linda Marrone about her neighbor, Joan Mally. I, too, have had the privilege of knowing Joan.

It is always sad when nice people move away from our community. They seem to leave a hole that cannot be filled.

Joan is a one-of-a-kind type of lady. She has seen much in her lifetime and had a great love and appreciation for her husband.

Joan spoke to me many times of her friendship with Linda and Ralph and all of the special meals they shared with her.

That kindness speaks volumes of the kind of people who live in our area. Good friends are hard to find and will always be missed.

I am sure that Joan will enjoy living close to her son and daughter-in-law, and that the Marrones will reach out to other neighbors. That's just the kind of people they are.

Writer sick of all Republicans' tactics

Aren't you just sick of it? Republicans in Congress are digging in their heels to the recent attempt to tighten the deal corporations get on their corporate jets.

President Obama wants to increase the depreciation schedule for corporate jets from 5 to 7 years.

That means the dollar amount the corporation can deduct from their taxable income each year related to the cost of that jet will be a little bit less.

Republicans can't bear such a heavy burden on corporations rich enough to have corporate jets. I guess they believe they need to give away tax dollars to those jet-owning corporations so the corporations can pay for the 23 percent increase in CEO salaries and the 38 percent increase in cash bonuses paid to CEOs between 2009 and 2010.

In that same time, the average worker salary increased one-half percent. Those CEOs in those corporate jets we help pay for via depreciation had a median salary in 2010 of $10.8 million. It takes the average worker, $39,000 median salary, 277 years to earn that much.

Aren't you just sick of paying far more in taxes relative to your income than they ever, ever will?

Aren't you just sick of watching the Republicans moan about the national debt, yet do everything possible to make sure the very wealthy corporations and CEOs make no shared sacrifice, even a little bit, all the while dismantling the safety nets of the middle class?

I know I am.
