Outdoor skills camp will be held in Winnmucca

The Maison T Ortiz Youth Outdoor Skills Camp will be held Friday- Sunday at Winnemucca Ranch.

The camp is named for and dedicated to Maison T Ortiz, a 15-year-old Galena High School student and a fifth-generation Nevadan who died in a snowboarding accident in January 2011. Maison was an avid sportsman and outdoor enthusiast and loved to share this passion with family and friends.

"It is the goal of the camp to give the deserving youth of Nevada the chance to enjoy the many opportunities offered by Nevada's outdoors," said Bertoldi.

The camp, created and organized through a collaborative effort by Nevada Bighorns Unlimited, Northern Nevada Chapter of the Safari Club International, Sparks Rotary, and the Fred Searles Trust, is dedicated to providing a unique outdoor experience and teaching valuable outdoor skills to urban and rural children of Northern Nevada.

Boys and girls aged 11 to 16 will be accompanied by mentors and expert volunteers as they participate in various activities including outdoor safety and hunter education, shooting, archery, map reading, fishing, basic survival and first aid, laser safe shot and fly tying instruction. All activity supplies as well as food, drinks and housing will be provided to participants at no charge.

The camp's youth mentor program aims to develop lasting relationships between campers and their mentors, which involves follow-up hunting and fishing opportunities.

"The Maison T Ortiz Youth Outdoor Skills Camp was created to combine education, safety and entertainment into an experience that will provide Nevada's youth with skills and knowledge to last a lifetime," said Mike Bertoldi, chairman of the camp steering committee and Immediate Past President of Nevada Bighorns Unlimited. "It's also a great way to broaden their horizons and give them the opportunity to develop a passion for nature and the outdoors."

The Maison T Ortiz Youth Outdoor Skills Camp will be hosted at the Winnemucca Ranch which is located on Winnemucca Ranch Road off of Pyramid Lake Highway, about 30 miles north of the Reno-Sparks metro area.

Six Tigersharks perform in San Jose

Six Carson Tigersharks swimmers participated at the Long Course Junior Olympic Championships in San Jose last weekend.

Here are the meet highlights involving Carson swimmers:

• Tim Grunert dropped five seconds on the 200 breaststroke. He qualified third into the finals and placed fourth overall (2:42.53, 17-18 age group). He got a best time in the 200 IM and swam in the finals. 2:28.43. He dropped one second on the 100 free (1:00.85). Dropped one second in the 200 free (2:17.06). Dropped one second in the 100 breast and got fourth place overall in the finals (1:12.97). Dropped five seconds in the 200 backstroke and got third place over all in the finals (2:33.67)

• Eli Everest dropped one second on the 100 back (1:19.11) and nine seconds in the 400 free (5:08.99). She also dropped two seconds in the 100 free (1:07.20), dropped two seconds in the 200 free (2:25.36), dropped five seconds in the 800 free (10:27.69) and got eighth place overall in the 15-16 1500 freestyle.

• Danielle Stanka dropped eight seconds on the 400 free (5:23.75) and got third place over all in the 17-18 division of the 1500 freestyle.

• Vanessa Rauch, 15, dropped 2.5 seconds in the 200 backstroke.

• Sophie Holmes dropped a half second n the 200 free (2:32.53)

Abby Pittman also competed in the event.

Kids triathlon set for July 23

The annual Capitol City Kids Triathlon is scheduled for July 23 at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

The event is open to kids ages 4 to 18. Registration is $20 per child. Kids will swim, bike and run. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the event begins at 8 a.m.

Kids from 11-18 will swim 200 meters, bike 2.6 miles and run 1.3 miles. The 9-10 division will swim 100 meters, bike 1.3 milk and run 0.4 miles. The 7-8 division will swim 50 meters, bike 0.4 miles and run 0.4 miles. The 4-6 division will swim 25 yards, bike 0.4 miles and run 0.4 miles.

Union Bruisers hold slim lead in pool

The Union Bruisers hold a 34-33 lead over O.G. Squeeze in the Highway 50 Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Casey Richards leads Bill Howard 13-8 in the high tier, while Michael Hoopes has a 23-21 lead over Richard Jenson in the middle tier. Scott Dorey and Joseph Sbragia are tied for the top spot in the lower tier with 18 points apiece.

In the Comstock Division, 9-Spoke has a 471-435 lead over Tied & Soldiered.

Kenneth Gabbard enjoys a 14-8 lead over Jamie Day in the high tier, while Lawrence Gloistein has a 26-21 lead over Jeff Cordova in the middle tier. Joshua Bice leads Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes 16-15 in the low tier.

Last-chance signups for Carson Pop Warner

Carson Pop Warner is holding last-chance signups from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Pizza Factory, located at 3120 Highway 50 East.

Football registration is $125 and cheerleading is $60. There is a fundraiser available for uniforms.

Tennis camp set at Silver Oak

Diane Baker-Roberts, Carson High tennis coach, is slated two tennis camps this month at the Silver Oak courts.

The next sessions are July 18-21 and July 25-28.

The 4-6-year-old group will play from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Kids aged 7 and up will go from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

The 30-minute class is $8 per day and the 90-minute class is $12 a day. Rackets will be supplied as needed, and participants are asked to bring water and wear tennis showed.

Summer golf camp at Carson Valley GC

Two summer golf camps have been scheduled at Carson Valley Golf Club.

The first is scheduled for July 19 and 20. The second is July 26 and 27. The camps are open to golfers 5 to 17 years of age. The cost is $80 which includes all four sessions. The fee includes course instruction, time on the golf course, clubs, golf balls and a golf goodie bag.

Gussow, Kim win at Thunder Canyon

Jeff Gussow and Han Kim shot a 34 to win the Thunder Canyon Men's Club Fourball Mutt and Jeff Tournament.

Ron Babey and Tim Morsani were second with a 36, while the teams of Jim Fitzpatrick and Tyler Daykin, Vern Hamilton and Saul Singer, Rob Jennings-Teat and Chuck Griffin, Jim Muth and Bob Oglesby, Mike Bennert and Keith Gottschalk, and Mike Schellin and Bret Andreas tied for third with 37s.

On the women's side, Barbee Waldrn, Jeanne Brennan, Shelly Brewster-Meredith and Ursula Tracy were first at 140. The team of Claudia Goodnight, Bianca Daykin and Kathy Archer were second with a 145.

NNWGA holds event at Silver Oak

Lisa Stanley was the low gross winner at the Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association event at Silver Oak recently.

Stanley finished with a 36-hole total of 152, two strokes better than Rayleen Cudworth.

Cindy Hall was the overall low net winner with a 136.

In the First Flight, Lynn Green won low gross with a 155, while Janice Campbell won low net with a 145. Earleen Chandler was second in low net with a 146, while Alex Phillips was third low net with a 150.

Sheri Lyle was the 2nd Flight low gross winner with a 172. Judy Sather was first in low net with a 146 followed by Sandy hardesty at 147 and Tammy Carvajal with a 151.

Bianca Daykin won low gross in the 3rd fligfht with a 189. Beth Juri won low net with a 147, while Linda Doerr was second, also with a 147, and Jacque Olson was third with a 157.

Sharks U14 team wins tourney

The Carson Sharks 14-and-under softball team beat the Fallon Force 3-2 to win the title at the Northern Nevada Fastpitch Association State Championships.

The tourney started Friday with the Sharks topping the Reno Predators 6-4. On Saturday, the Sharks topped the Fallon Force 10-7 in two extra innings. The Sharks knocked off the Carson Valley Hotshots 8-6 on Saturday night.

The Fallon Force knocked off the Sharks 5-1 to force an if-needed game which was won by the aforementioned 3-2 score.

The Sharks' 8-year-old team took first, the 16s placed second and the 10s placed third. All in all, a very successful weekend for the Sharks program.
