Contract awarded for east-west water transmission main

A light agenda Thursday for the Carson City Board of Supervisors resulted in only five actions being taken, including the awarding of a $3.5 million contract to A&K Earth Movers to install the city's east-west water transmission main.

Phase 1 of the project includes installing about 5,500 feet of new 34-inch PVC water line and improvements from the intersection of Robinson Street and Saliman Road to the intersection Butti Way and Airport Road.

The project starts Tuesday, and Deputy Public Works Director Darren Schulz told the board there isn't much time for the pipe costs to go up by then, but there are no guarantees. A contingency amount not to exceed $347,000 was also approved.

In other matters, supervisors:

• Awarded a $516,000 contract to Frank Lepori Construction to install a city corporate yard salt/cinder building and solar photovoltaic system.

• Heard the annual report of Assessor Dave Dawley.

• Accepted the annual monitoring report on the Horse Creek Ranch conservation easement as recommended by the Open Space Advisory Committee.

• Set the number of residential building permits for 2012 at 697. So far in 2011, the city has issued only eight of the allowed 698 allocations, said Planning Director Lee Plemel, and the highest number issued in the last four years was 77. The allocation number is based on a percentage of the estimated population, he said.

Supervisors will meet again on Aug. 4.
