Library hosts dollar book sale

The Friends of the Library Dollar Book Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12-13 at 900 N. Roop St.

Hardcover books will be $1 and paperbacks and children's book will be 2 for $1. Also featured will be music books and geography books in Japanese.

Dayton dog park gearing up for fair

The Dayton Valley Dog Park is hosting its third annual flea market and crafts fair on Aug. 20. Vendors can secure a space for $10. The event will take place at the Dayton Valley Dog Park location at Dayton Valley Road and Como Road. Donations can be sent to Dayton Valley Dog Park, P.O. Box 995, Dayton, NV 89403.

Gently used items also are being sought to sell at the dog park booth. Contact Andrea at 246-0814 for further information.

There also will be a raffle. Tickets can be purchased at the booth at Smiths or contact Mary at 450-0256 or Freya in Carson at 841-7878.

Help needed with annual Backpack Attack

Soroptimist of Carson City and Platinum Plus Salon and Spa are again hosting the Backpack Attack program to provide backpacks, school supplies and hygiene items to children in need.

Children need backpacks and items such as crayons, wide-ruled notebook paper, three- or five-subject wide-ruled notebooks, three-ring binders, pocket-only folders, pencil boxes or bags, red, blue and black medium ballpoint pens, No. 2 pencils, erasers, glue sticks, blunt-nosed scissors, yellow highlighters, rulers, pencil sharpeners, 3x5 ruled index cards and protractors.

Many of these children have been removed from their homes and need hygiene supplies such as bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and small tissue packages. Any of these items will help and will be packed in the backpacks.

A free raffle ticket for a chance to win a spa package valued at $250 from the salon, plus a number of other raffle prizes, will be awarded for each backpack donated.

Library to host author Joyce Cox

The Carson City Library will host author Joyce Cox at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 for a book signing and presentation based on her book about the history of Washoe County. Copies of the book, "Images of America: Washoe County, Nevada," will be for sale.

Building supplies needed for October haunted house

Jason and Christina Stinson, who operated a haunted house last year at their home at the corner of Broadleaf and Northgate in Carson City, say they're planning to make this year's event even bigger and better.

The couple has already begun working on the haunted house to help the homeless through gently used clothing and canned food donations from those who attend, but they need help with supplies to finish up the construction.

Local musicians play at Dayton Farmers' Market every Thursday

The nonprofit Dayton Farmers' Market at Community Roots takes place from 3-6:30 p.m. every Thursday this summer on Highway 50 and Second Street. The market features music, organic eggs and fruits and vegetables.

Teen interns at Community Roots and the Farmers' Market are learning hands-on skills for running a successful farmers' market and nursery, and developing their own micro-businesses, as well as job skills with guidance from Community Roots director Wendy Madson.

In addition, the vendors at the market donate their excess produce to the local food pantry and children's summer programs at the close of the market each Thursday evening.

Healthy Communities Coalition to meet in Silver City

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Silver City School House/Community Center.

The meeting will feature two local speakers -- the chairman of the Silver City Town Advisory Council, Erich Obermayr; and the director of the Capital City Arts Initiative, Joe McCarthy.

There also will be an opportunity to tour the community garden or view art and photo exhibits by local youths. The agenda includes discussion of crisis health care and other items.

Fifth annual community drive for school supplies

Bauter & Holmes is sponsoring the fifth annual community school supply drive. Donations can be dropped off at the Bauter & Holmes office, 525 W. Washington St. through Aug. 17. Their hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Supplies needed include pens, pencils, paper, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, etc. Monetary donations are also accepted and appreciated. Bauter & Holmes will match a percentage of the amount donated.

Applications sought for volunteer positions

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on The Board of Appeals in the following categories:

• Civil/structural engineer

• Mechanical engineer

• Electrical engineer

• Registered architect

The applicant (depending on the category or if in business for themselves), may need a business license to do business in Carson City.

This Board provides advice on matters involving the building codes and fire codes in Carson City. Each position is for a two-year term, set to expire January 2013 excluding the Registered Architect which will expire January 2012.

Applicants should be aware this Board may require a minimum commitment of up to five hours a month. All members will serve without compensation. The Board of Supervisors will interview and appoint the qualified person to the Board of Appeals.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from the city website at www.carson.org or by contacting the Carson City Executive Offices at 887-2100.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Aug. 12.
