Community sports briefly: Carson High fall sports signups slated

Carson High School fall sports signups will take place Tuesday, Aug. 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the North Foyer. Physicals will be available for $10 in the Morse Burley Gymnasium. Physicals are required for all incoming freshman and juniors or every two years. Sports packets are available online at www.carsonhigh.com - use the Athletic Tab. All pages, of the two-part document, must be completed and signed.

Returning athletes must have all fines, fees cleared for eligibility. Athlete must carry a least a GPA of 2.0 without failures from the June grading period. Insurance is mandatory for all athletes, school insurance will be available. For more information contact the Athletic Office at 283-1900 beginning Aug. 1. Those not able to attend can sign up between 8 a.m. and noon until Aug. 9 in the Athletic Office.

Bonar aces at Thunder Canyon

Jack Bonar aced the No. 6 hole at Thunder Canyon using a seven iron. Bonar scored the hole-in-one on the 160 yard hole on July 24.

Fry, Cooper net 58

at Silver Oak event

The top six- two-man teams at Silver Oak's Senior Men's Ryder Cup format event on July 19 were Ed Fry and Michael Cooper with a net 58; Wayne Feletar and Bill Challenger with a 66; Roland Keith Owin and Buzz Wagner with a 67; Jim Pursel and Doug Mcgilvray with a 68; Alex Talmant and Bob Lewis with a 68; and Steve Alcalay and Gary Curti with a 69.

Closest to the pin winners were: Alex Talmant at 1-foot 7-inches on hole 2. Mike Cooper at 6-feet 2-inches on hole 6. Alex Talmant at 16-feet on hole 7. And Bob Lewis at 4-feet two-inches on hole 12.

Thunder Canyon results from July 22

The team of Saul Singer, Bill Stanley, Vern Hamilton and Ron Babey shot a 128 to win the Men's Club One in the Bucket event on July 22.

Second place was Matti Vazeen, Steve Palazzolo, Chick Clemmensen and Alan Tack at 132. Third place was

Dave Mello, Mike Schellin, Steve Archer and Jim Colgan with a 134.

Carl Baker won the closest to the pin contest on hole 17 at 10-feet, 9-inches.

Winning matches in the Goddess Match Play event were: Joann Sheerin, Becky Martinelli, Lynn Greenman, Nancy Gates, Cheryl Lukens, Monica Pike, Gayle Block, Brooke Nielsen, Karon Sullivan, Jeanne Brennan, Kathy Cockerill, Ursula Tracy and Tina Hughes.

Disc golf tournament slated for Saturday

A disc golf tournament will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the end of Cardelli Road in Dayton. The course was built on Lyon County land by volunteers and money donated by the community. An estimated 70 players are expected. For more information contact Kevin at 459-6552.

Swim team successful at

masters relays

Pierre Hathaway, of Carson City, August Motmans, Ashley Jones and Harry Goldsmith, of Glenbrook, recently swam well in the Pacific Masters Long Course Meters (50 meter pool) earlier this month in Santa Cruz, Calif. The 4-person team known as the S.E.X. (Severely Elderly Xercisers) Masters relay team of the Alameda Masters set an world record in the 400 medley relay for the 320-339 age group at 7:56.60. FINA started recognizing world records in the 400 in 2010, so some United States Masters Swimming national records are faster than the existing world records. The USMS record stands at 7:34.79, by Coast Masters in 1998, according to Swim World Magazine.

Including the relay events, Goldsmith won four events and had one second. Hathaway garnered four wins and two thirds. Both Hathaway and Goldsmith regularly workout at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Rural Rumble set

for Aug. 27

The fourth annual Rural Rumble, presented by the city of Fallon and Let's Get It On Promotions, is slated for Aug. 27 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Last year, the Rural Rumble featured several mixed martial arts bouts, but Terrance Lane of Let's Get It On Promotions, said only boxing will be featured this year.

"We are thrilled to be presenting the fourth annual Rural Rumble once again in Fallon," Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. said. "Boxing has played an important role in this area for over a century, and we are proud to continue the tradition."

Headlining the card is Northern Nevada favorite Derek Hinkey (8-2, 7 KOs) of McDermitt, Nev. Hinkey will be making his highly anticipated return to the ring after a prolonged layoff due to a hand injury from his fight against Ariel Espinal in 2009.

"It just never really healed correctly and caused me discomfort in my past two fights," Hinkey said. "But I'm 100 percent now and chomping at the bit to get back in there."

Hinkey, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, stayed in shape and in the gym while allowing his hand to heal. He has trained with several high-profile boxers and MMA fighters recently to keep his game sharp.

Hinkey will need his best as he takes on the experienced and tough Anthony "Powerhouse" Bartinelli (20-14-2,13 KOs) of Phoenix, in a six round middleweight bout. Bartinelli is no stranger to fighting top names in the middleweight division, and will prove to be a test for Hinkey.

In a light-heavyweight match-up, Reno's Carlos Gaytan (2-0-1, 2 KOs) will be facing San Jose's Anthony Johnson (4-0, 1 KO). Both fighters come into this fight undefeated.

Returning to the ring is Junior Middleweight Jose "Chuy" Elizondo (1-0) of Carson City. Elizondo, who was a stand out amateur, scored a spectacular shut-out decision over Rodrigo Espinoza on April 29.

In a separate bout, highly regarded amateur Carlos Vasquez of Reno will be making his pro debut against Vincente Medellin (1-0) of Los Angeles. Vasquez, who's brother is highly ranked amateur Santos Vasquez, decided that his aggressive boxing style was better suited for the professional side of boxing. Vasquez versus Medellin will take place at 112 pounds.

In a local boxing match-up, cruiserweights Carey "Bubba" Dupree (0-1) of Reno, NV will be facing Jack "The Motor" Montgomery (0-1) of Winnemucca, NV.

9-Spoke holds lead in Comstock Division

After eight weeks of play, 9-Spoke has a three point lead of the Big Dogs in Comstock Division play of the of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association. Jeff Cordova (32 points) leads the high tier by 12 points over Kenneth Gabbard (20 points). In the middle tier, Lawrence Gloistein leads Lisa McCuiston 26-23. In the low tier, Joshua Bice (24 points) leads Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes (18 points.)

In the Highway 50 Division, Union Bruisers leads O.G. Squeeze 44-37. Tight Rack is right behind in third with 36 points.

In the high tier, Casey Richards leads Bill Howard 13-8. In the middle tier, Michael Hoppes leads Richard Jenson 29-28. In the low tier, Scott Dorey (18) leads Ronald Ferrando (17), Ron Stock (16) and Kim Ness (15) in a tight battle.

In the Mosconi Division, Squeeze Play holds a one-point lead over The Spoke (30-29). In the high tier, Jamie Day and Robert Haddix are tied (23 points) with Juan Pina right behind.

In the middle tier, Kim Dandos and Jason Kochamp are tied with 20 points. In the low tier, John Raker hold a one-point lead over Joshua Bice, Johanne Normand and Gloria Rodriquez.
