Carson City Board of Supervisors consider rate, fee hikes

When they meet Thursday, members of the Carson City Board of Supervisors will take on a number of proposed rate hikes which are needed to pay for utility projects and offset the cost of services passed down from the state.

Proposed increases that would be effective Sept. 1, if approved are:

• $3.48: Sewer service

• $1.14: Water service

• $.50: Sewer, water right-of-way tolls

• $2.50: NV Energy, SW Gas franchise fees

The resolutions and ordinances relating to the increases are scheduled to be discussed at 2 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the board is scheduled to appoint one member to the Carson City Convention & Visitor's Bureau representing the hotel and motel industry for a two-year term.

Other matters to be discussed or acted upon Thursday when the board convenes at 8:30 a.m. are:

• As the Liquor and Entertainment Board, members will consider amending an ordinance governing the issuance and regulation of liquor licenses.

• Changes to the business license regulations which would add mandatory background checks for locksmiths, safe mechanics and taxicab drivers.

• Changes that eliminate or remove certain other portions of the code having to do with business licenses and special events and assemblies.

• The future role of the audit committee.

• Hiring a contract-type auditor for the position of the city's internal auditor.

• Increasing the annual budget for the internal audit department from 54,000 to $110,000.

• A resolution to transfer the city's share of the 2011 private activity bond cap to the Nevada Rural Housing Authority.

• Development of a common open space development known as Schulz Ranch between Center and Schulz drives.

• Action to convey Carson City lands in the upper reaches of Ash Canyon to the United States.

• A resolution authorizing the expenditure of $12,000 from the redevelopment authority to support the Ghost Walk event.
