Carson City investigators are looking into a suspected check fraud ring in which a group of people have been cashing stolen checks at casinos and check-cashing businesses in Carson City.

According to Detective Dave Legros, two women, Amanda Valenzuela, 22, and Ashley Hubbard, 23, were recently arrested in connection with the ring.

Legros said the group is allegedly stealing checks, washing them of their original amounts and intended recipients then cashing them for larger amounts with different names.

Casino surveillance shows two men and a woman, yet unidentified, as cashing some of the checks.

Hubbard was arrested Sunday after allegedly trying to pass one of the stolen checks at Slot World, according to the police report.

Valenzuela was arrested Tuesday at Slot World when she also allegedly tried to cash a stolen check.

When Slot World sent out an email alerting other Carson casinos, a clerk at Bodines checked their records on Wednesday and discovered Valenzuela had cashed a similar check Sunday, the arrest report states.

Valenzuela is being held in the Carson City Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of uttering a forged instrument and four count of obtaining money under false pretenses. Hubbard is being held on a warrant for suspicion of felony check fraud and a new charge of felony check fraud.

A search of a home Wednesday on Fleetwood Avenue in connection with the case yielded no new information, said Legros.

Anyone with information or if they've fallen victim to the scam is asked to call Detective Dave Legros at 887-2020 ext. 41400.
