SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants plan to place heralded rookie Brandon Belt on the disabled list after an MRI revealed a hairline fracture in slugger's left wrist.
Belt was hit by a pitch from St. Louis' Trever Miller in the seventh inning of Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals. Manager Bruce Bochy initially thought Belt would miss a few days and return to the lineup, but tests performed Saturday morning revealed the fracture in Belt's wrist.
Bochy called the loss of Belt "a tough break" and declined to give a timetable when he might return.
Belt made two starts after being called up May 26 and is batting .211 with a homer and four RBIs this season. He was on the Giants' opening-day roster before being sent down to the minors after struggling at the plate.
Belt was recalled from Triple-A Fresno when catcher Buster Posey was shelved with a fractured bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle.
San Francisco is expected to put Belt on the DL on Sunday. Conor Gillaspie, who appeared in eight games with the Giants in 2008, will be called up from Fresno.
