Healthy Communities to meet Thursday

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is hosting a meeting to discuss a multiple-agency, one- or two-day "triage" style free health services event in Lyon County.

The discussion will be part of the coalition's public meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Silver Springs Community Center.

This will be the first in a series of planning workshops with the goal of multiple agencies and volunteers working together to deliver free primary care, dental care, and other medical services to those who have no insurance or are under-insured.

Coalition Director Christy McGill explained that "this type of large scale event could also possibly double as a practice event for disaster preparedness in Nevada."

Historic barns on tour

Tickets are on sale for the Douglas County Historical Society's Tour of Historic Barns of Carson Valley. The event will take place 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 25.

Tickets are $25 and include guided tours of six historic barns. Also included in the price is free admission to the Courthouse Museum Genoa and the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center at any time during that day. For an additional $10 you can enjoy an open range lunch at Dr. Eliza Cook's historic home.

Tickets can be purchased at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville or Courthouse Museum Genoa. Tickets can also be ordered by phone at 782-2555.

Proceeds from the "Historic Barns of Carson Valley" tour benefit the Douglas County Historical Society and help with the operation of The Genoa Courthouse Museum and the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

DivorceCare planning weekly meetings

DivorceCare, a help seminar and support group for people experiencing divorce and/or separation, or even considering divorce, will be on Tuesday evenings beginning June 14 and continuing for 13 weeks.

DivorceCare features nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery topics. Seminar sessions include "Facing My Anger," "Facing my Loneliness," "Depression," "New Relationships," "Kid Care," and "Forgiveness."

"We understand how deeply people and families are hurt by divorce," said Robin Burton, organizer of the group. The support group "is a place where many people have found that they can begin putting their lives back together again."

DivorceCare will meet in the home of Danny and Robin Burton in Gardnerville.

JOIN Moonlight run on the V&T

Enjoy a moonlit ride on the Historic V&T railroad aboard the historic train. Boarding begins 7 p.m. June 18.

Secret Service Catering will serve wine and a light dinner while traveling to Gold Hill. In the historic town, walk to either Maynards Station or the Gold Hill Hotel to refresh your cocktail or stay on board to American Flat then back to Virginia City and a toast to the almost full moon.

Swim for diabetes

Come on out for a day of open swimming at The Carson City Aquatic Facility 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 18.

The diabetes-awareness event is sponsored by "WE CAN" (Way's to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition).

Both indoor and outdoor pool will be open and there will be refreshments, giveaways, and games for the kids and free raffle prizes and information for the adults.

Cost is $5 at the door. The aquatic facility is located at 841 N. Roop St. (behind the Community Center in Mills Park).

Association of widowed is planning summer activities

The South Lake Tahoe Widowed Persons Association has begun their summer program schedule, which includes weekly picnics at Kiva Picnic Area, where participants will bring their own barbecue choice and the club will provide briquettes.

Other monthly activities are: pizza night, mystery dinner, chat and chew, breakfast and the general meeting and potluck held at Tahoe Verde Clubhouse. Other events in the making are the Genoa Concert, Dixie Trip, Donner Museum, Apple Hill, Sutters Creek, concerts at the Valhalla Boat House, Balloon Races in Reno, hiking and biking, and many more are on the agenda.

Activities are an important part of the WPAC.
