VFW meetings scheduled

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3726 monthly meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 28.

In addition, there will be an organization meeting to start a Carson City chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. That meeting will also begin at 6 p.m.

Openings available at preschool

The Child Development Center located on the Carson City campus of Western Nevada College has several full- and part-time preschool openings for children from 3-6 years of age.

July 4th golf event supports U.S. troops

Thunder Canyon, a private golf and country club located in Washoe Valley, is inviting the public to play 18 holes of golf on July 4th in support of "Tee It Up For The Troops." This tournament hosted by Thunder Canyon and its membership will be open to the public, with proceeds from the tournament and any donations going to the campaign.

Tee it up for the Troops was established in 2005 by the family and friends of a soldier who enlisted in the U.S. Army after Sept. 11, 2001. When the son was asked by his father what he needed, the son responded by asking his father to do something for the soldiers and their families back home. Tee It Up For The Troops was created to honor that request and to recognize the needs of all veterans who have served and continue to serve this nation.

In its inaugural year of 2005, Tee it up for the Troops raised more than $80,000. Today, they have raised more than $3 million dollars and hold events at more than 100 courses throughout the country. The proceeds of Tee It Up For The Troops benefit numerous programs that support veterans and their families.

Opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. followed immediately by a shotgun start.

This day of golf includes 18 holes with a cart and a barbecue lunch. Cost is $80 per player, $60 for all active or retired military personnel. To sign-up, contact the Thunder Canyon Golf Shop at 882-4597. Space is limited and sign-ups will be completed by July 1.

Workshops offer job search help

Job Opportunities in Nevada will host two series of workshops on life skills and employment prep. The classes for both the June and July series are at 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the JobConnect office, 1929 N. Carson St.

Funding is provided by NevadaWorks and Auxiliary aids are available upon request.

• Today and July 26 - Session 1: Life Skills

The goal is to impart basic life, workplace, job search and employment preparation skills to ensure participant success during job acquisition and retention phases. We include a variety of classroom techniques, including lecture, small and large group discussion, role playing and one-on-one assistance. Learn techniques in self-esteem building, time management, and financial planning. Develop decision-making skills, set and define personal and professional goals. Participate in instruction on business perspectives. Obtain the qualities that employers are looking for.

• Wednesday and July 27 - Session II: The 60-Second Me

A verbal description of your "features and benefits." It is essentially your response to the employer's statement "tell me about yourself." Apply fundamental marketing principles to your job search. Identify, memorize and recall your achievements, skills and strengths. Use effective presentation skills to paint a brief verbal picture of yourself.

• Thursday and July 28 - Session III: Resumes

This session empowers the client with all the necessary components for obtaining the job interview: writing a resume, the appropriate components, and effective types and styles. Master the application and get answers to the tough questions asked. Learn how important first impressions and appropriate business attire are to acquiring the desired position.

• Friday and July 29 - Session IV: Interviews

Gain the necessary techniques for successful interviewing. Arrive early, be prepared, and smile your way to employment. Learn interviewing self-confidence. Be able to identify and avoid the psychological pitfalls involved in interviewing. Gain the necessary confidence by participating in practice interviews. Learn the importance and effectiveness of the follow-up correspondence.

Reunion planned for CHS class of '71

The Carson High School Class of 1971 will start its 40-year reunion with a no-host bar Friday at 6 p.m. at the Firkin & Fox at 310 South Carson Street. Those who remember classmates from that year are invited to join us for a drink and some reminiscing.

The weekend will also feature dinner and dancing at the Empire Ranch Golf Course on Saturday and a casual picnic at Mills Park Sunday 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Coin show raffle tickets now on sale

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Nevada Territory, the Nevada State Museum staff designed a raffle prize to celebrate this year's coin show, set for Aug. 26-27.

Raffle tickets are now on sale for the grand prize, featuring three commemoratives: one ounce .999 fine silver medallion, celebrating the 150th anniversary; copper Abraham Lincoln medallion; and brass Nevada State Seal medallion. This prize is framed with a photo of the Carson City Mint and valued at $600. Other prizes include a $500 gift certificate to Northern Nevada Coin, and three 1884 GSA Carson City silver dollars, donated by Northern Nevada Coin.

The prizes are on display in the Dema Guinn Concourse. Tickets are $1 each or six for $ 5, and can be purchased over the phone by calling 687-4810, Ext. 237. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets support education and exhibits at the museum.

The grand prize drawing will take place at 3 p.m. Aug. 27; lesser prizes will be raffled throughout the show. Winners not need to be present to win.

The Carson City Mint Coin Show features coins and collectibles, food sales by Friends of the Nevada State Museum, music, gold panning, numismatic education, and Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations. Silver Sponsors include the Nevada Appeal, and Northern Nevada Coin; sponsors include Downtown Coin and Friends of the Nevada State Museum.

Artist Reception Soiree at Coco Dolce

Coco Dolce will host an artist reception and soiree featuring painter Leslie Anne Webb at 6 p.m. July 8.

Her paintings have been adorning Coco Dolce's walls for the past three months and the time has come to meet the artist in person. Webb's works are available for purchase in original form, as well as giclee, painted limited-edition prints.

Carson River canoe trip offered at Lahontan State Recreation Area

Nevada State Parks is hosting a canoe trip down the Carson River June 25. The trip covers a stretch of the Carson River from just below the Lahontan Dam, River Camp, to the diversion dam, about 3-1/2 miles downstream.

The trip will take approximately 2-1/2 hours to complete. Afterwards participants are welcome to return to River Camp with a picnic lunch and visit with park staff. Vehicles will be available to return participants to River Camp at the end of the tour.

Nevada State Parks' canoes are available to reserve by calling 775-577-2226, Ext. 3. When making reservations please leave a name and phone number in case of any scheduling changes. Participants bringing their own canoe/kayak are asked to bring a life jacket and paddle for each person in their boat.

The dam side of Lahontan State Recreation Area is located off Highway 50, 18 miles west of Fallon and 45 miles northeast of Carson City. Participants will meet at River Camp on the Lahontan Dam side of the park at 9 a.m. Participants bringing their own boats are asked to show up at 8 a.m. to shuttle their vehicle to the take-out point.

The event is open to the public. There is a $7 per vehicle entrance fee. Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.

All participants are asked to bring appropriate clothing, bug repellent, sunscreen and water. Bring a picnic lunch, if you would like to stay after the trip and have lunch by the river.

Renewable Energy Authority Consolidated Into NSOE

Energy Office Seeks Public Comment on 2009 IECC Building Code

Nevada has combined the former Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Authority with the Nevada State Office of Energy. Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 426 into law which requires the state office and its director to assume the duties of the authority on July 1.

Programs and regulations that will move to the state energy office include the creation of a statewide energy plan, adopting the International Energy Conservation Code statewide and granting partial property, sales and use tax abatements to qualifying renewable energy facilities.

The NSOE is now seeking comments regarding the draft regulations and proposed language of the adoption of regulations for the 2009 IECC, a code adopted by many state and municipal governments in the U.S. for the establishment of minimum design and construction requirements for greater energy efficiency standards.
