Schmidt, Ransom lead Aces past 51s

RENO - A four-hit effort for Konrad Schmidt, two homers by Cody Ransom and runs in each of the first six innings lifted the Reno Aces to a 13-6 victory over the Las Vegas 51s Tuesday in the series opener at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces scored multiple runs in five-straight frames to build a lead that was never seriously threatened. First-place Reno has now won three-straight games and moved to 13 games over .500-a new high-water mark for the 2011 season.

At the dish for Reno, Schmidt finished his night 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ransom hit solo homers in the first and third innings, while Brandon Allen added a two-run blast in the fourth. All nine Aces starters recorded a hit Tuesday, with seven Reno batters finishing with a multi-hit night.

Starter Barry Enright (6-2) dealt a quality start for the Aces, scattering two runs on five hits over six innings of work to earn his fifth-straight victory.

The Aces and 51s continue the Silver State Diamond Challenge with a 1:05 p.m. game today. LHP Tom Layne (6-2, 5.27 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Las Vegas counters with RHP Rey Gonzalez (1-1, 5.00 ERA).

Vehicle sought in Nevada football player shooting

RENO (AP) - Police are looking for a silver four-door vehicle seen on a cellphone camera leaving the scene of a weekend shooting that left Nevada Wolf Pack football star receiver Brandon Wimberly seriously wounded in downtown Reno.

Reno police say the image shows what appears to be a mid-to-late 2000's Mazda 6 speeding from the Freight House district moments after Wimberley was shot about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Wimberly is 22 and is from Los Angeles. He'll be a junior next fall at UNR.

Wolf Pack coach Chris Ault visited Wimberly after surgery at a Reno area hospital, and met with the other players involved.

Wimberly's injuries aren't life-threatening, but he might not play football again.

Secret Witness in Reno has posted a $2,000 reward in the case.
