Classic jazz playing Plan:b

The Rocky Tatarelli Quartet will bring their jazz standards to Plan:b Micro-Lounge for a concert at 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

The saxophonist is a local jazz legend, and well-known throughout the jazz network from Detroit to California, playing with some of the best performers around. In recent years, he hangs his hat in the Reno.

"First of all, I really love it here," he said of his reason for settling in Northern Nevada.

He's played at Plan:b with a variety of groups about 30 times, he said, and often backs his wife jazz singer Judith Ames.

Tatarelli's quartet consists of Mick Valentino, guitar, Charles Di Laura, on upright bass, Chuck Hughes on drums.

Although Tatarelli and the rest of the quartet can play a range of musical styles, Sunday's concert is all about the old jazz standards.

"We'll concentrate on the classic jazz standards of the '40s and '50s," Tatarelli said.

Also on tap at Plan:b this weekend are:

• Groove Sessions - 9 p.m. Friday.

The band featuring Manny and Ronnie Sanchez and Sarven Manguiate performing their original songs as well as putting their own twist on many treasured classic. The music is suitably thought of as groovin, movin music.

• Unplugged - 8 p.m. Saturday. Featuring:

Michelle Pappas, described as "Reno's Indie Treasure", her remarkable vocal abilities and superb songwriting are evident in her live shows.

Dave Berry, the primary songwriter, band leader, guitarist and lead vocalist of Jelly Bread, also likes to retreat to a personal safe haven where he incorporates acoustic and electric guitars, a dobro, electric piano.

Tyler Stafford's first full length album has organic roots with an array of acoustic instruments that fit it's Americana feel and lyrics that are honestly vulnerable.
