U-12 Wolfpack win tourney in Reno

The Carson Futbol Club U-12 Carson Wolfpack went 3-0-1 en route to winning the Nevada Cup title over the weekend in Reno.

The Wolfpack didn't allow a goal during its four games. The locals beat the Jaguars from Sparks, 6-0, tied the Chilipeppers 0-0, beat Placer United 5-0 and knocked off American River Freedom 1-0 in the championship match.

The Wolfpack, which consists of players from the Carson, Reno and Gardnerville area.

Carson FC is holding it's annual tryouts this weekend from 1 to 3 p.m. at Edmonds Sports Complex. For more information, email carsonfutbolclub@yahoo.com.

Cabela's holding event

Cabela's is hosting a series of free seminars on sporting dog training and other pet topics this weekend in Reno.

Included in the seminars both days will be basic dog first aid, training retrievers, introduction to dog obedience and getting your dog ready for hunting season.

District LL tourney starts June 29 in Carson

The annual District 1 Little League all-star tournament starts June 29 at Governors Field. The 9-10 and 10-11-year-old teams will compete from June 29 to July 9. The 11-12-year-old teams will compete from July 2-11.

The 9-10 and 10-11 squads only compete at the district and state levels. The 11-12 team competes at the district, state, regional and national level. Teams are from Gardnerville, Carson City, North Tahoe, South Tahoe, Reno, Sparks and Truckee.

Opening ceremonies are at 3:30 p.m. on the 29th and first pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

Shabi grabs title at Empire Ranch

Jim Shabi shot a net 61 to win the A Flight at Empire Ranch's Senior Men's Club individual stroke play tournament on June 17.

Fred Olesek took second with a 62 and Bill Milligan was third with a 63.

In Flight B, Nick Paul won with a net 60, two shots better than Bill Gibson. Terry Thomas was third with a 64. In Flight C, Lew Dodgion won with a net 58, while Joe Scott and Ivan Lepire shot 61s.

Tom Teders won Flight D with a 58, while Ed Cabello was second with a 63 and Vern Rosse, Fred Polaske and Dan Rodgers tied for third with a 64. Ron Popp won Flight E with a 63, Cleve Dalen was second with a 64 and Hans Ehrlin and Chuck Edgar tied for third with a 67.

Carey wins title at C.V.

John Carey shot a net 62 to win the individual stroke play tournament at Carson Valley Golf Club on June 19.

Dennis Patterson was second with a 63 and Bob Pemberton was third with a 64. Tim Davis and Bruce Sanford tied for fourth with a 67.

Cockerill shoots ace at Thunder Canyon

Former Carson High golf star J.T. Cockerill aced the 203-yard par-3 6th at Thunder Canyon on June 20.

Cockerill used a 7-iron for his shot.

The TC Ladies Club held its Rendezvous event on June 17-18.

Joann Sheerin and Cheryl Lukens won the overall title with a 150, a stroke better than Sandi Oglesby and Shelly Brewster-Meredith. Vicki Carl and Hazel Bowen were third at 154.

Oglesby and Brewster-Meredith were the first-day winners with a 60. Bianca Daykin and Carla Watts were the second-day winners with an 87.

Three Reno teams qualify for nationals

Too Sober To Play, The Murphs and Morelli's Marauders qualified for the American Poolplayers National Team Championship scheduled for Las Vegas Aug. 18-27.

Too Sober qualified with their win in the 9-ball regional held June 11-12 in Sparks. The Murphs won the 8-ball title and Morelli's Marauders were second in 8-ball play. The winning teams received $4,000 in cash to pay for their trip to Vegas.

McMahon & Radtke win Dayton golf title

Vince McMahon and Bill Radtke combined for a 175.4 to win Dayton Valley Golf Club's Palmer Club Member/Member tournament

There were four 9-hole formats - scramble, best ball, Chapman Scotch and total score for both balls.

Jim Crawford and Jeff Miller were second with a 175.6, Dennis Hillyard and Sam Merchant were third overall at 175.8, Andrew Palmer and Churn Sullivan were fourth at 176.3 and John Benkert and John Stephans were fifth overall at 176.6.

In the scramble format, Hillyard and Merchant were first with a 29.9 while Eddie Hult and Charlie Oliver were second with a 30.0. Bill Pirch and John Roethel won the Chapman Scotch with a 33.3, while Palmer and Sullivan were second with a 30.0.

Scott Kennedy and Don Robertson won best ball with a 31, while Palmer and Sullivan took total score with a 71.

Silver State spikers fare well in finale

The Silver State Volleyball Club's 12-year-old team won their age-group title at the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) Area League Championship tournament held in Rancho Cordova, CA.

The 12s beat Club Solano Beast 25-20 and 25-17, beat the Rage 25-22 and 25-20 and the Sydney Black 25-23, 26-28 and 15-13, all on Saturday. On Sunday, Silver State beat Sydney Black 22-25, 25-23 and 15-13 and then knocked off Club Solano Dynamite 25-18 and 25-20 to reach the finals.

In the championship match, Silver State knocked off Sydney Black 25-22, 24-26 and 15-13.

Members of the team are Raychel Allen, Natalie Anderson, Ally Gunderson, Shannon Leiss, Keely Pilgrim, Audrey Suiter, Brynn Rothfusz, Annika Hillbrick, Alie Sclafani and Marlies Wendler.

The Silver State 13 Black squad played in the 14-year-old division and finished second.

On Saturday, the locals beat Dynamix 25-14 and 25-21, Amador (14-2) 25-7 and 25-11 and Alta Sierra (14-3) 25-15 and 25-11. In bracket play they beat Amador (14-1) 24-26, 26-24 and 15-11, and then knocked off Fallon (14-1) 25-20, 22-25 and 15-11.

On Sunday, Silver State beat Amador (14-2) 25-10 and 25-11 and then lost to Amador (14-1) 21-25 and 22-25. In the finals. Silver State lost to Alta Sierra (14-2) 19-25 and 21-25.

Members of the 13 Black team are Juliana Anderson, Aubrey Caires, Gabby Clark, Bailey Gansberg, Nikki Hamada, Liz Heinz, Rylee Holland, Erin Klein, Maggie Mayer, Gabby Palazzolo, Paris Regan, Jaycie Roberts and Makenzie Tucker.

9-Spoke leads Comstock Division in pool league

The 9-Spoke squad has a 236-225 lead over Tied & Soldiered in the Comstock Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Kenneth Gabbard leads the high tier 7-4 over Alex Gutierrez and Mike Snoddy. Kim Dandos has an 11-10 lead over Jeff Cordova in the middle tier, and Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes and Lawrence Gloisten are tied for the top spot in the low tier.

The Spoke and Cues Yer Daddy share the lead in the Mosconi Division at 13 apiece.

Juan Pina leads Chris Wood 12-11 in the battle for the high tier top spot, while Jerry O'Dell has a 15-14 lead over Caren Adkins in the middle tier. Derek Sheldon leads Stella Keener 11-10 for the low tier lead.

Tigersharks swim well

The Carson Tigersharks competed over the weekend at the Reno Gamble and swam well despite the fact the meet is in the middle of the long course season.

Charlee Bradley (13-14 division) dropped 12 seconds off her 100 free time and 16 seconds off her 100 breast time. In the 11-12 division, Kelsey Bradley dropped nine seconds off her 50 breast stroke time, five seconds off her 100 back time, two seconds off her 50 back time, eight seconds off her 100 free time and 25 seconds off her 200 free time. Stella Carroll dropped 17 seconds off her 100 back time, 16 seconds off her 50 butterfly time, nine seconds off her 50 breastroke, 22 seconds off her 100 breast time and five seconds off her 50 back time. In the 15 and up division, Vanessa Raugh dropped six seconds in the 400 free, 75 seconds in the 100 butterfly, three seconds in the 200 free and four seconds in the 800 free. Corinne Defilippi dropped 24 seconds in the 13-14 100 breastroke and 27 seconds in the 800 free.

On the boys side, Brett Kolb dropped 16 seconds in the 11-12 400 free, took two seconds off his 50 butterfly time, five seconds off his 50 breast time and one second off his 100 free effort. Jay Session (11-12) dropped his 50 breast time by 1.5 seconds, dropped his 50 butterfly by one second, lowered his 200 free by two seconds and set a new PR by a second in the 100 free. Dagen Kipling dropped his 50 breast time by seven seconds and established a new Junior Olympic time.
