Farewell party at Children's Museum is Sunday

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will host an Ice Cream Social and Farewell party for Penny Holbrook from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday at the museum.

Known as Ms. Penny, Holbrook has been volunteering at the museum for about 10 years, including leading the Tuesday Books & Brags, organizing numerous cultural events, and teaching a summer arts and crafts class.

Past to Present closed during move

Past to Present 2nd Hand Store had to temporarily close its doors as it moves into a new location. Owner of Marie Davis said they are working as quickly as possible to get the new location open. She said customers can still call her at (775) 229-1828 or visit the new location at 1829 Brown St.

Free film series continues Friday

The Brewery Arts Center Friday Film Series continues Friday with five animated comedies at 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the Performance Hall, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

The free Friday Film Series is five weeks of short films for children and an affordable way for families to spend time together. Refreshments are available for purchase.

Free HIV testing offered

Carson City Health and Human Services will offer free HIV testing on Monday in recognition of National HIV Testing Day.

No appointment is necessary, and the free testing will be available from 9-11 a.m. and 1-6 p.m.

Low-cost HIV testing is always available at the health clinic on Long Street.

In addition to testing, HIV services offered by Carson City Health and Human Services include case management, a support group for those infected with HIV and referrals to area health care providers.

Public comment sought on building code

Nevada has combined the former Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Authority with the Nevada State Office of Energy. Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 426 into law which requires the state office and its director to assume the duties of the authority on July 1.

Programs and regulations that will move to the state energy office include the creation of a statewide energy plan, adopting the International Energy Conservation Code statewide and granting partial property, sales and use tax abatements to qualifying renewable energy facilities.

Comments on the draft regulations and proposed language of the adoption of regulations for the 2009 IECC are being sought. Those interested may submit written comments at upcoming regulation hearings. For information, contact Emily Nunez at 687-1850 ext. 7324.

Rockhounds to meet Tuesday

High Desert Rockers meets will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the new location at Capital Christian Center, 1600 Snyder Ave., Carson City.

Walt Aster and others will discuss and show their samples of wire wrapping and rock-related art. Learn details of the upcoming July field trip and membership.

There also will be a silent auction, refreshments, and door prizes. The event is free but donations of a special rock or two are requested.

Carson City Grocery Outlet helps feed people facing hunger

Carson City Grocery Outlet has announced the Independence from Hunger Campaign, a month-long effort during July which will bring together Carson City Grocery Outlet and their customers to help feed people in Carson City who are facing hunger and dealing with food insecurity.

Carson City Grocery Outlet will encourage their customers to donate food and cash to support the local Friends In Service Helping Food Bank.

Carson City Grocery Outlet has made it simple to join the cause with these easy options for their customers:

• Look for specially-marked food items. These are items that F.I.S.H. currently needs. Purchase those items and place them in the collection bin at the front of the store.

• Tell a Grocery Outlet cashier that you'd like to make a cash donation at the register. Donations will go directly to F.I.S.H. Food Bank

• Pick up information at Carson City Grocery Outlet about hunger, food insecurity and local/national resources for people in need. Be informed and willing to help.

Senior outing trip for July heads to Harveys

Happy Senior Tours will go to Harveys on July 12.

The bus will load at 7:45 a.m. at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 901 Beverley Drive, and return to the center at 4 p.m.

Cost is $17. The casino will give each guest $10 in free play plus a food voucher for the day.

Applicants sought for volunteer position

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Historic Resources Commission.

Positions available are for a construction professional and someone who is an architect or design professional, building construction professional, archaeology, anthropology, history professional or a property owner who resides within the district.

The Historic Resources Commission reviews projects in the Carson City Historic District and makes recommendations to the Regional Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors regarding matters relating to Carson City historic resources.

The term of the building construction professional will expire July 2013. The other term will expire February 2015. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours every other month is expected. All members serve without compensation. Applicants must be residents of Carson City and registered voters.

Volunteer applications can be obtained from the city website http://www.carson.org or from City Hall, 201 N. Carson St. No. 2. Applications will be accepted until July 29.

Friends of the Library host annual dinner meeting

July 14 is the date for the annual dinner meeting for the Friends of the Carson City Library.

A no-host bar will open at 5 p.m. followed by dinner and a business meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Plaza Conference Center.

Guest speaker will be author Dale Brown, and a tri-tip or vegetarian dinner will be served at a cost of $10 for members of the Friends.

Reservations can by made by calling 885-9917 or 883-3219 or by coming in to the Friends' Book Store at the Library.

Anyone who is not a member and would like to join the Friends is invited to join.

The Carson Aquatic Facility is offering three more sessions beginning June 27. Classes are open to children 3 years and up.

Health inspection scam alert issued

The Nevada State Health Division's Food Inspection program continues to receive numerous reports that restaurants and some markets in Nevada are receiving telephone calls from people posing as health inspectors.

Many states across the nation are reporting that scammers are hoping to collect information in order to fraudulently sell goods and services and extract money on the Internet and extort money.

Health Division inspectors never schedule routine inspections or alert operators by phone of pending inspections. Food establishment operators are asked to always request identification badges and business cards from people who represent themselves as inspectors and to never allow an inspector without proper credentials into their establishment.

Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity should call 775-687-7533.

Capital Democrats to meet

Capital Democrats will meet at 7 p.m. July 6 in the AFSCME Building, 700 E. Robinson St.

Pizza and more will be available from 6:30 p.m.

Discussions will include candidates running in the upcoming election, registration of new voters, and participation in the candidate barbecue and fun fair to be sponsored by Carson City Democratic Women's Club July 23.

Thunder Canyon offers Tee It Up for the Troops

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce urges golfers to support America's troops while enjoying 18 holes and a 4th of July barbecue at Thunder Canyon Golf Course in Washoe Valley.

The National Tee It Up for the Troops Golf Tournament starts at 9 a.m. with a ceremony and shotgun start.

The $80 cost per person includes golf, a golf cart and the barbecue lunch.

PTA Nevada Congress receives $1,000 through The Allstate Foundation

Allstate agent Dennis Brinson has earned an Allstate Foundation "Agency Hands in the Community" award for outstanding commitment to community service. With this award comes a $1,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation to PTA Nevada Congress.

"These grant funds will provide necessary resources to PTA Nevada Congress that it otherwise wouldn't have," Brinson said. "The experiences I've enjoyed working with PTA Nevada Congress have been life-changing. This organization truly improves the lives of those within our community and I'm proud to play a part."

The program, which launched in 2003, recognizes Allstate agents' volunteerism within the community and provides financial support to organizations through The Allstate Foundation. Every Allstate agent who volunteers for a charitable organization in their community may qualify for this award.
