COMMUNITY BRIEFLY: Giants' World Series trophy comes to UNR

RENO - The San Francisco Giants, 2010 World Champions, know their legion of fans extends across the Sierra Nevada and Northern Nevada.

As a gesture of appreciation, the San Francisco Giants organization is sending its World Champions Trophy to the University of Nevada, Reno campus where it will be available for free, public viewing 5-7 p.m., March 8 in the Joe Crowley Student Union Ballroom.

Free parking will be available for this event on the sixth floor of the West Stadium Parking Complex, off North Virginia Street and just north of the 15th Street intersection, beginning at 3 p.m.

After stopping in Reno, the Trophy Tour will go to Tahoe City where the trophy will be on display at Alpine Meadows Lodge 12:30-2:30 p.m., March 9. It will continue its Northern California tour throughout March and return to San Francisco in time for the Giants' home opener at AT&T Park on Friday, April 8.

Spoke, Twisted Stix tied for pool lead

The Spoke and Twisted Stix With Attitudes are tied for first place in the Black Widow Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Don Allred of Good Guys & Bad Guys leads the 6-7 tier with 31 points, while Juan Pina of Twisted Stix is second with 12. Eric Dereng of Jerr's Shooters leads the 4-5 tier with 27 points, nine better than Kirsten Kehe of Twisted Stix. Robert Bogue of Jerry's Shooters leads the 2-3 tier with 16 points, two better than Rachel Hurt of Cues Yer Daddy.

In the Comstock Division, All Work & No Play holds a five-point lead over Twisted Stix With Attitudes. Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine leads the 6-9 tier with 24 points, seven better than Kenneth Gabbard of Rack Busters. Jeff Cordova of All Work & No Play leads the 4-5 tier with 24 points, three better than teammate Timothy Kane and Christopher Skelley of Dean's Machine. Caren Adkins of Tied & Soldiered leads the 1-3 tier with 25 points, seven better than teammate Greg Munoz.

In the Highway 50 Division, O.G. Squeeze leads with 32 points, three better than Collateral Damage, Dayton Inn and the VC Miners. Bill Howard of the VC Miners leads the 6-7 tier with 10 points. In the 4-5 tier, Gregory Theis of Pocket Puppies and Perry Levy of the VC Miners are tied for first at 18 points, Barbara Burton of Collateral Damage leads the 2-3 tier with 16 points, one ahead of Shawn Wilson of Dayton Inn.

In the Mosconi Division, AltF4 leads the way with 26 points, two better than Big Dogs and Unintentional Defense. Robert Haddix of Unintentional Defense leads the 6-7 tier with 17 points, three ahead of Kenneth Gabbard of Big Dogs and David Giovacchini of Role Models.

Jack Parish of Unintentional Defense leads the 4-5 tier with 24 points, four better than Christopher Skelley of AltF4. Jerrika Wendt of Jerry's Kids leads the 2-3 tier with 15 points, two ahead of Role Models' Robert Reed

Wine Bottle Open in 22nd year

Sign-ups for the 22nd annual Wine Bottle Open scheduled for June 17 are currently under way.

The yearly event, which is run by Wayne Nash, is held at Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione, Calif. After golf, there is a wine tasting, barbecue and awards ceremony. Registration is the night before the event at Colina Del Oro Restaurant.

Carson Valley accepting 2011 memberships

The Carson Valley Men's Club is accepting applications for its upcoming season which starts March 20.

The dues are $55 which includes NNGA membership for the season. The fee is $45 for Carson Valley season pass holders. All tournaments are handicapped and flighted so everybody has a chance to win prize money.

4 Carson residents make national tourney

Tami Beasley, Eric Richards, Mike Snoddy, and Don Tucker of Carson City qualified for the American Poolplayers Association's (APA) 2011 National Singles Championship by winning in regional competition on Feb. 26-27 in Sparks.

Beasley, Richards, Snoddy, and Tucker are members of the APA and participate in weekly League play in Carson City.

Four champions, one from each of the four skill level tiers, will be crowned at the national event being held in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel & Casino April 28-30.

25th annual Chukar Club fundraiser set for Saturday

The Carson Valley Chukar Club will host its 25th annual fundraiser at the Douglas County Fairgrounds beginning at 5 p.m. on March 5.

The event annually draws more than 600 people with more than 100 raffle prizes and 40 auction items.

With the cost of the admission ticket, each participant receives a year-long membership in the club, along with a tri-tip dinner and a shot at a door prize. All participants must be at least 16.

With matching funds from the Pittman-Robertson Act, the chukar club has donated more than $1.5 million to conservation projects.
