Coalition hosts guest speaker
The Healthy Communities Coalition meets at 9 a.m. March 10 at the Silver Springs Community Center: Donna Weidner, workforce liaison for Nevadaworks, is the guest speaker for coalition of Lyon and Storey counties.
Weidner will explain how Nevadaworks is supporting workforce development in Northern Nevada by funding qualified service providers who work with those seeking employment, skills upgrading, or who are entering the workforce for the first time.
After Weidner's presentation, coalition members will continue a discussion of youth violence prevention that they began last month. See www.safeyouth.gov for more information.
In addition, coalition partners will share printed material about free area resources to prevent HIV/AIDS because March 10 is also Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
Coalition staff and partners also will have updates on new Dayton and Silver Springs school gardens; upcoming health fairs, professional development training, legislative issues of regional interest, progress on alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug use prevention, suicide prevention, including the new high school crisis text messaging programs in Lyon and Storey counties, and on community support for access to health care and other benefits and support groups for veterans, enlisted people and their families, as well as the Veteran's Administration's new rural veteran's outreach program.
