PREPS: Carson boys win 2; Softball squad splits

RENO - Carson High notched two wins at the Mike Bearman Tournament Friday afternoon, and the Senators accomplished that feat two different ways.

In the opener at Reno High, the Senators trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, but scored eight times in their last two at-bats to beat Enochs 11-8. In the nightcap at Wooster, the Senators manufactured two early runs without a hit and went on to a 6-1 win over the Colts. The first game was stopped after five innings because of a time limit, and the second was called for darkness after six innings.

Carson, 2-1, concludes the tourney today at Reno High. The Senators will face Lowry at 10 a.m. and the host Reno Huskies at 12:30 p.m.

"We did a lot better job today hitting the ball (and scoring)," Carson coach Cody Farnworth said. "They (Enochs) tried to play small ball early and we did a better job against it."

Austin Pacheco and Chance Quilling each collected three hits in the opening game for Carson. Pacheco finished with five RBI, included a bases-clearing double in the fifth. The junior outfielder hopes it's a coming out party for the Senators.

"We just came out and swung it," Pacheco said. "This is a solid line-up compared to last year. I'm more comfortable and more confident."

"Both of those guys (Pacheco and Quilling) we need to swing it," Farnworth said. "They are both so fast through the hitting zone."

Zak Harjes and Dion Copoulos hit safely in the opener.

In the second game, the Senators got five strong innings from Drew Moreland, who scattered seven hits in five innings, before giving way to Harjes, who worked a 1-2-3 sixth to end it.

"I thought I did pretty good," said Moreland. "I had a lot of run support and the guys played good defense behind me."

Moreland said the last time he started a game was his freshman season on the JV squad. He struggled in the first couple of innings with his breaking ball, but got sharper as the game went on. The only Wooster run was unearned.

"He (Moreland) threw well," Farnworth said. "The third (starting) spot is up for grabs. If we needed to go four, we'd be looking at him as the fourth starter. If we don't go with four starters, he'd be in middle relief. He also did a nice job at third base in the first game."

Carson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Colby Blueberg walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Pacheco followed with a pop-up which was dropped by Filiberto Castro. Pacheco never stopped running and reached second base. Blueberg scored on Quilling's infield out.

Carson added a run in the second, again without the benefit of a hit.

Rory Petersen walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Casey Wolfe's infield out.

Carson made it 3-0 in the third when Blueberg singled, stole second and scored on two wild pitches by Wooster's Tenaya Brown.

Wooster made it 3-1 when Garrett Powers hit a slow roller to third. Wolfe picked it up barehanded and threw wildly past first, allowing Powers to reach second. Matt Bowers followed with a run-scoring double.

Carson put the game away in the fifth on singles by Blueberg, Pacheco and Petersen, a two walks, balk and a passed ball.

Blueberg led Carson with two hits, three runs and two stolen bases.

CHS GIRLS SPLIT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Carson split its two games at the Sacramento Tournament of Champions en route to a second-place finish in its pool.

Carson opened Friday's schedule with a 10-0 win over Casa Roble. The Senators dropped a 7-4 decision to Roseville.

Carson, 2-1, will play today at 12:30 p.m. against an unknown opponent.

"We played well," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We played two good teams. We won one and then came up short in the other. Everybody is swinging it pretty good. We're getting it done up and down the lineup."

In the first game, Lou Ashbaugh allowed two hits over four innings. She struck out four batters.

Carson snapped a scoreless tie in the third, tallying seven runs.

Lisa Yamamoto had a key two-run double, while Ashbaugh had a sacrifice fly, Lauren Knorzer a run-scoring single and Emily Collins a run-scoring triple. Morgan Kleine, Moriah Lane and Christa McGahuey all had hits in the inning.

Carson added three in the fourth when McGahuey tripled in two runs and Jen Purcell singled in a run. K.C. Withrow had a single in the inning.

In the second game. Roseville took a quick lead against Christina Gallegos, scoring five in the first and two in the second.

Withrow singled home a run in the fourth and Collins tripled home two runs to make it 7-3. In the fifth, Purcell's fielder's choice scored McGahuey who had doubled.

McGahuey and Knorzer led Carson with two hits each, while Purcell, Withrow, Lane and Elise McGowan added a hit each.

CHS WINS THRILLER VS. GALENA

RENO - Carson trailed Galena 9-0 early, but scored 10 in the top of third to take a 10-9 lead and then fell behind 13-11 before pulling out the 15-13 win on Rafe King's two-run single.

Gehrig Tucker went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs while Tyler Valley went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jace Zampirro added a solo homer.

JV SOFTBALL LOSES TWO

SPARKS - Carson High's JV softball team opened up the 2011 season with two losses in the Reed Tournament.

Carson lost to Spanish Springs 13-1. Carson was led by Skylar Jones (1-2), Becka Breuer (1-2) and Serina Cazel (1-2).

Carson lost the second game, 3-2 to Reed. Carson was led by Kandis Tuttle (1-1 with 2 walks), Erica Watson (1-3), Sara Brewer (1-3) and Skye Simpson (1-2).

Carson plays Fallon today at 9 a.m. before entering bracket play.
