COLLEGE: WNC sweeps CSN; Softball swept

LAS VEGAS - Western Nevada College swept rival College of Southern Nevada Friday afternoon to improve to 10-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

WNC won the seven-inning opener 7-5 on the strength of Connor Eppard's grandslam, and then bounced back for a 13-6 win in the nightcap.

WNC and Salt Lake City are both 10-0 in conference play. CSN dropped to 1-9.

"They are better than 1-9," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "They were tough outs all day. They have god players. We're ready for a dogfight (today). Our kids grinded it out all day at the plate. They did a good job."

Beau Day drove in WNC's first three runs. He had an RBI single in the first and hit a two-run homer in the third for a 3-2 lead. That set the stage for Eppard's blast which upped the lead to 7-2.

Andrew Woeck gave up all five runs, working five innings and striking out seven. Anthony Consiglio worked two scoreless innings to earn the save.

In the second game, CSN used a six-run fifth inning to wipe out a 4-0 deficit and take a 6-4 lead. WNC scored four to go ahead for good 8-6.

Jon Sigado gave WNC an early 3-0 lead with a two-run double. In the seventh, he tied the game at 6 with a two-run double. He went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Eppard went 3-for-6 with three RBIs, while Sean Potkay went 3-for-5 with two runs. Chris Woolley went 3-for-5 with three runs.

Brandon Jackson had a no-hitter through four innings, but gave up five runs in the fifth. Tim Peterson finished up, allowing one run and two hits in 4-plus innings. Peterson fanned seven batters.

SOFTBALL: WNC SWEPT

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The Wildcats' offense was nowhere to be found Friday. They managed just five hits in losing 9-1 and 10-2 to College of Southern Idaho.

The first game went 5-plus innings and the second game went five innings. The teams conclude the four-game series today with a doubleheader.

"We're having problems executing," WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. "We had some opportunities in the first game."

In the fifth inning, WNC scored on a bases-loaded walk. It should have been more because the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs. In the sixth, WNC had runners at first and second, but failed to score.

Ashley Hall and Cassie Vondrak, who was the losing pitcher in the opener (14 hits allowed, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts), had WNC's only hits.

WNC trailed just 1-0 until the fourth when CSI struck for five runs.

Sarah Cudahy and Hall had run-scoring hits in the nightcap. Vondrak also hit safely.
