COLLEGE: WNC sweeps DH, series from CSN

HENDERSON - Western Nevada College moved into sole possession of first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of College of Southern Nevada Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats, who won 6-5 and 15-9, became the first team to ever sweep CSN at CSN. The Wildcats are 12-0, one game ahead of Salt Lake City. CSN dropped to 1-11 in league and 12-16 overall.

"This was a team weekend," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "We pitched all eight pitchers we brought with us, and all the position players got at least one hit.

"We played so hard this weekend. It was fun to watch. I can't remember us running the bases so well."

Jon Sigado singled in Chris Woolley with what proved to be the winning run in the seventh. Pat McMeel hit a two-run HR to give WNC a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

In the second game, Tyler Spencer made his first start of the season, and responded with a one-hit effort over five innings. He left with a 7-1 lead.

Tanner Nielsen got WNC off to a fast start with a two-run inside-the-park homer in the second. Woolley cemented the game with a grandslam in the seventh. He went 3-for-5 in the game.

Connor Eppard went 3-for-4, while Brooks Klein went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Zach Hendrix also went 2-for-3.

The news wasn't all good this week for WNC. Whittemore revealed that starting third baseman Kevin Taylor was dismissed from the team for violating team rules.

SOFTBALL: WNC SWEPT

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - College of Southern Idaho smashed six homers en route to a doubleheader sweep Western Nevada College, 9-1 and 19-2, Saturday afternoon in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.

Both games were halted after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

WNC starter Jamie Klopatek gave up two three-run homers in the first inning against CSI. Klopatek was tagged for 12 hits and walked four in four innings.

Ashley Hall's solo homer in the fifth averted a shutout and was WNC's only run of the game. Hall went 2-for-2. Megan Hein collected WNC's only other hit.

CSI slugged four homers in the second game. The winners scored 13 runs in the third inning. Hall started and was tagged for six runs and six hits in 2.1 innings. Cassie Vondrak finished up and allowed 13 runs and 10 hits.

The Wildcats' only runs came on solo homers by Hein and Melanie Pfeiffer. Tera Tibbets and Jordyn Thomas contributed a hit apiece.
