COLLEGE: Jameson pitches Pack to win

SEATTLE - Nevada (5-13) sophomore Tom Jameson pitched the Wolf Pack to a 2-1 victory over the University of Washington (4-15) in the first game of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark Friday.

With the victory the Pack snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 5-13 while the Huskies fell to 4-15.

Nevada scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning on Garrett Yrigoyen°Øs sacrifice fly and reliever Matt Gardner retired the side in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

Left fielder Nick Melino reached on an error by UW pitcher Aaron West and a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Brock Stassi moved him to second base. Pinch runner Jameson Rowe came off the bench to replace Melino. Second baseman Joe Kohan°Øs single put runners on the corners and Yrigoyen°Øs fly ball down the right field line scored the winning run.

In the bottom of the ninth inning Yrigoyen°Øs error allowed designated hitter Chase Anselment to reach but he was thrown out trying to advance to second base by left fielder Tommy Niebergall for the first out of the inning. Gardner struck out the next two hitters to end the game.

Nevada scored the first run of the game, in the second inning when Kohan tripled and crossed the plate on designated hitter Hugo Hernandez°Ø single. The Huskies tied the game with a run in the third inning when three consecutive singles plated a run.

Jameson (1-4) won his first game of the season allowing just the one run on eight hits in eight innings on the mound. Gardner (3) has yet to allow an earned run this season and saved his third game of the year pitching a scoreless ninth inning. West (0-4) was tagged with his fourth loss of the despite pitching a complete game. He allowed two runs, one earned on 10 hits in the game.

Kohan (3-for-4,R) and Hernandez (2-for-3,RBI) led the Pack with three and two hits respectively. Yrigoyen and Hernandez each had an RBI for the Pack. UW second baseman Jacob Lamb (3-for-3) had three hits and drove in the Huskies lone run in the game.
