PREPS: Dayton wins, improves to 11-0

WINNEMUCCA - Dayton High improved to 11-0 after sweeping Elko and Spring Creek in a 3A split doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Dayton beat Elko 4-3 and Spring Creek 11-1.

Conner Oliver picked up the mound win in the opener, striking out seven and walking three. In the nightcap, Timo Ply struck out six and walked two.

"All weekend long, I never got to use the bullpen," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said. "The starting pitchers have been really good. They are throwing strikes and working out of jams."

Houston Berntson doubled home the go-ahead run to give Dayton a 2-1 lead in the opener. Dayton remained ahead the rest of the way.

In the second game, Dayton was ahead 4-1 in the third and that lead went to 8-1 when Logan Garling, the Dust Devils' No. 9 hitter, cracked a grandslam.

"That drove a stake in their heart,'" Merrell said of Garling's blast.

Garling and Kyle Farnworth each finished with two hits.


SWIMMING:

COUGARS SWEEP CHS

Spanish Springs swept Carson in a High Desert dual swim meet Friday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The Cougars won the boys's meet 146-135. The Cougars' girls topped Carson 142-136.

Elizabeth Everett (500 free, 6:00.60), Abi Pittman (100 fly, 1:10.48), Erin Chang (50 free, 27.53) and Sophie Holmes (100 free, 58.16) were the only individual winners for the Carson girls.

Chang was also third in the 500 free (6:20.20), while Nicole Updegrove was second in the 50 free (28.20) and 100 fly (1:13.59). Holmes was second in the 100 breast (1:15.92). Pittman took a second in the 200 free (2:07.02). Chloe Hern was second in the 100 free (1:05.49).

Ashton McIntosh won the 100 free (55.79)and was third in the 100 back (1:18.15). Gary Showalter won the 100 breast (1:07.95), was third in the 200 IM (2:28.42). Zach White won the 200 IM (2:19.75) and was second in the 100 fly (1:06.76). Andrew Peckham won the 500 free (6:39.54).


TRACK: ARIAS WINS TWICE

FALLON - Kathy Arias won the shot put and discus at the Fallon Invitational on Saturday.

Arias threw a season-best 38-9 in the shot and went 118 in the discus while competing against several 4A schools.

The quartet of Katrina Breithaupt, Shanleigh Brethaver, Brenda Cid and Mallorie Gribble finished eighth in the 3200 relay. They were timed in 11:25.

Manuel Castaneda was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 45-3 and sixth in the discus with season-best of 123-11. Kage Walker was third in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet.


SOFTBALL: Dayton goes 2-1

WINNEMUCCA - Dayton improved to 8-2 by winning two Ruby crossover games in Winnemucca over the weekend.

Dayton opened with an 8-3 loss to Lowry and then beat Elko 10-4 and Spring Creek 9-6. The Dust Devils play at Yerington on Tuesday.

Kenzie Cole scattered six hits in the win over Elko. She also fanned 13 and walked two. Dayton was down 3-0 after five innings, but erupted for 10 runs in its last two at-bats to win the game. Cheyenna Burrows went 1-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Cole went 1-for-2 with a triple.

In the win over Spring Creek, Dayton scored three times in the first and never looked back. Makayla Shadle worked the first five, allowing four hits and striking out seven. Cole worked the last two innings to get the save. Burrows and Natasha Wells each collected two hits and drove in two runs. Shadle added a single and double, and Cole went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Against Lowry, Kelly Combs went the first three, allowing two hits. She hit several batters before Shadle came n and threw the last four innings. Wells and Cole each collected two hits. Cole also drove in two runs.
