All aboard the CTRH Auxiliary's V&T train featuring wine

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary's V&T Train featuring wine departs at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Carson City Eastgate Depot. It returns at 3 p.m.

Tickets include wine, cheese and dessert served to and from Virginia City and a choice of three venues, either the Museum, Mine Tour, the Trolley Tour of Virginia City or The Way it Was Museum.

Lunch will be at the Red Dog Saloon, and shopping discounts are included. Shuttle service to and from C Street is included.

Tickets are $65 per person, and proceeds support the CTRH Hospital.

Public Invited to BLM resource advisory meeting

The Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the BLM-Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road.

The public may present general written and/or oral comments to the council at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A field trip will be conducted, weather permitting, at 8 a.m. Thursday, which will include stops at various public land sites in Churchill County before returning to the district office by 5 p.m.

Members of the public are invited to participate both days, but they will need to provide their own transportation and lunch on the field trip on Thursday.

Topics of discussion will include the district manager's reports on current program of work, landscape approach/land health assessment processes, impacts to proposed wind energy projects in eagle habitat, BLM wildlands policy, geothermal program review, Salt Wells Energy Projects Draft Environmental Impact Statement, field tour of a geothermal power plant at Salt Wells in Churchill County, Nevada historic marker dedication for Pony Express Trail at the plant at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and other topics brought up by council members.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday, a special presentation will be made of Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act Round 12 preliminary project funding recommendation, and the council will host a public comment period specific to the proposals.

Footprinters schedule April meeting

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting on April 21 at the Plaza Conference Center in Carson City. A no host bar starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Capt. Todd Moss will talk about the Douglas County Bomb Squad. The dinner is $17. WNC offers weekend motorcycle safety courses

Western Nevada College Carson City is offering 11 sections of motorcycle safety courses during April and May for both beginners and experienced riders. The non-credit courses are hands-on and cover a wide range of skills.

Basic Rider Course, CMSV 1000C, meets 6-10 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cost: $100. Session dates: April 1-3; April 8-10; April15-17; April 29-May 1; May 6-8; May 13-15; May 20-22.

Experienced Rider Course, CMSV 1100C, meets 7:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Saturdays. Cost: $60. Session dates: April 16, June 4, July 30 and Sept. 10.

In the basic rider course, students of all skill levels learn motorcycle controls, basic maneuvers, street riding, and traffic skills. Participants usually include a mixture of beginning and experienced riders.

The experienced rider course is designed for those with riding experience who want a refresher course, those who have been licensed in another state, or those who are unlicensed but have a minimum of 200 hours riding experience in the past six months.

All classes are taught using the "Motorcycle Safety Foundation" curriculum, a nationally recognized program. Upon successful completion, students will receive an MSF completion card to take to Nevada Division of Motor Vehicles to obtain a Class M motorcycle endorsement.

WNC Driver Education at Dayton HS

A required driver education course for teens age 15 and older will be offered at Dayton High School and Fernley High School during the Lyon County School District spring break. The class will meet Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. April 25-28. Cost per session is $110.

Nevada law requires new drivers under age 18 to take a 30-hour new driver education course if one is offered within 30 miles of their home.

In the non-credit course, young drivers will learn safe driving techniques through lectures, class discussion, guest speakers, and films that cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and driving maneuvers in various situations and environments.

In addition to Nevada traffic laws, the WNC New Driver Education program focuses on key areas where young drivers lack skill - poor visual search habits; road hazards; insurance; and vehicle and tire safety precautions.
