COMMUNITY SPORTS: Twins off to a fast start in CCLL Majors

The Twins have won three of four games in the early stages of the Carson City Little League Major Division season.

The Twins beat the Red Sox 12-4, lost to the Orioles 12-6, beat the Yankees 11-1 and the Diamondbacks 12-2.

Terin Keller and Chase Campagni led the Twins with two hits apiece. Keller drove in three runs. Kyle Glanzman fanned four in 1.2 innings. Twins pitchers struck out 15 hitters.

In the loss against the Orioles, Jayden DeJoseph hit a two-run homer and Tez Allen smacked a double.

Against the Yankees, DeJoseph went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, while Patrick Henrickson drove in two runs and Glanzman had two hits and drove in a run. Allen picked up the win with 3.2 innings of work. He fanned four and didn't allow an earned run.

DeJoseph fanned 11 and walked two to pick up the win over the D-Backs. He helped himself at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a homer, double, two singles and four RBIs. Allen went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

First Tee offers May program in Carson

RENO - The First Tee of Northern Nevada is offering after school golf programs for youth 7-18 years during the month of May.

Classes are available Mondays and Wednesdays at Eagle Valley and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Empire Ranch. Cost is $80 per session. Each session includes seven or eight lessons. Financial assistance is available, easy to apply for, and completely confidential. Golf equipment is also provided for participants who do not have their own clubs.

Registration can be completed online at www.tftnn.org. Class schedule and registration forms may also be downloaded from the website or may be requested by calling 851-2332. Classes are available for beginner to advanced youth golfers.

Carson senior swimmer part of No. 1 ranking

The Carson Aquatic Center can proudly claim one-half of a Master's Relay Team that is No. 1 in the 2010 FINA World Rankings in two relays and second in two more.

Pierre Hathaway, 80, of Carson City and Dr. Harry Goldsmith, 81, of Glenbrook, are part of the S.E.X. Team (that's "Severely Elderly Xercisers") that swims as part of the Alameda Aquatic Masters club. The other two members, who live in the Bay Area, are Augie Motmans, 83, who with Hathaway are Palo Alto High graduates and Ash Jones, 79, who Hathaway swam with at Stanford.

After a couple years of waiting, last year the relay team crept into the 320-359 age group. In the SCM (Short Course Meters, i.e. 25 meter pool) 400-meter medley relay they were the only team, in their age group, in the world who swam that event in 2010. In the SCM 200 freestyle relay (50 meters each), six teams submitted times and the group was second, only 3.6 seconds behind the first ranked team.

In LCM (50 meter pool), they competed in the 400 freestyle relay and were first out of four teams, nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place team from Australia.

In the individual events, Hathaway was eighth in the 80-84 LCM 200 backstroke and Jones was 10th in two SCM individual medley events in the 75-79 bracket.

Firefighters host golf tourney June 8

The Nevada State Firefighters Association are host a tournament June 8 at Dayton Valley Golf Club.

The cost is $65 per player.

Zogorski wins at Empire Ranch

Tom Zogorski shot a net 64 to win Flight A of the Senior Men's Club event at Empire Ranch.

Nick Paul was second with a 67 and Skip Hempler was third with a 68. Carl Slate won Flight B with a 63 with Steve Scharfe carding a 66. Ed Rector was third with a 67. Dan Powers won Flight C with a 61 with Robey Willis and Joe McKenna following with 64s. Ken Cuneo won Flight D with a 59, while Don Becker was next with a 61. Bob Blom was third with a 66.

Sharkey Chiang won Flight E with a 66, a stroke better than Don Fagan.

Blom, Powers, Tom Teders and Larry Harmmon were closest-to-the-hole winners.

Three tie in event at Thunder Canyon

Kathy Cockerill, Brooke Nielsen and Monica Pike each finished with 12 points in Thunder Canyon's Chicago Points event held on April 29.

The Thunder Canyon men played a Progressive Best Ball tourney with the team of Burt Clements, Leland Sullivan, Mike Schellin and Bret Andreas finishing first at 129. Fran Menante, Chuck Griffin, Steve Rydel and Terry Gilmartin were second at 134.

Jones, Scoville win at Silver Oak

Danny Jones and John Scoville won the Senior Men's Club event on April 26. No scores were reported.

Ed Fry and Mark Hanzlik finished second, while Jerry Johnson and Jim Zewan took third.

Jim Silsby, Tom Abbett, Alex Talmont and Arlo Miler all won closest-to-the-hole honors.

Two tied for Mosconi Division lead

The Big Dogs and Unintentional Defense are tied for first place in the Mosconi Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Each squad has 60 points, two ahead of AltF4. Jack Parish of Unintentional Defense leads the 6-7 tier with 50 points, 11 better than teammate Julie Hunter. Joshua Stewart of AltF4 leads the 4-5 tier with 37 points, six better than Tadd Patchen of Rack Fink and Markus Rickard of Jerry's Kids. Rack Fink's Josiah Toledo leads the 2-3 tier with 39 points, 16 ahead of Jerrika Wendt of Jerry's Kids and Kari Nye of Unintentional Defense.

Squeeze Play has a 59-58 lead over Jerry's Shooters in the Black Widow Division. Don Allred of Good Guys & Bad Guys leads the 6-7 tier with 52 points, five ahead of Eric Dereng of Jerry's Shooters. Mike Snoddy of Cues Yer Daddy has a 42-35 lead over Bradley Dabe of Squeeze Play. Caren Adkins of The Spoke has a 33-24 lead over John Leedom of Scratch Master and Gina Cotterman of Good Guys & Bad Guys.

Running event set for May 14 in Dayton

The Healthy Communities 5K Run is schedule for May 14 rain or shine at Como Park.

Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30. All proceeds benefit the Dayton Resource Bank and Stand Tall. Walkers and runners are encouraged to participate.

On May 6, Empire Ranch is hosting a 9 and Dine event. Golf starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow.

Middle school hosts hoop camp

The 2011 Carson Basketball School for players entering grades 4 through 9 is set for June 6-9 at Carson Middle School.

Girls will go from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., while the boys go from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. each day.
