CHS students take home variety of awards

Future Business Leaders of America is a first-year program at Carson High School, under the advisement of Betty Forester.

She had many students qualify in the top 5 in the state FBLA competition, and the following students have qualified for the FBLA National Competition in Orlando, Fla.

Curtis DeVore and Alyson Christi received first place in Desktop Publishing. Mohamad Sayafi, Michael Samii and Alex Sanchez were second in Business Plan. Daniel Gall and Ashley Saarem came in second place for Website Design.

The Naval Service Training Command recently announced that the Carson High School Naval Junior ROTC Unit has been selected as distinguished unit with academic honors for the past school year.

Principals of schools with this distinction will have three nominations to each of the major federal service academies for the next school year.

Competing with more than 60 NJROTC units at high schools in the Western United States, Carson was the only unit in Northern Nevada earning this award.

The cadets leading the unit for this school year were Company Commander Derek Paradise; Executive Officer Scott Galloway; Operations Officer Evan Richards; and Command Master Chief Timothy Fischer.

Siara Hassey, Caitlin Jones and Josh VanSickle are three of the advanced photography students at Carson High who will have a gallery exhibit of their photography at 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the Performance Hall Lobby of the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. King St.

Carson High School will be recognized as a National Healthy School in June. The school wellness council has been working hard for the past three years to gain this recognition.

CHS is a healthier school in terms of eight categories including policy, school meals, competitive food and beverages, PE, Health, Physical Activity, school employee wellness and before and after school programs.

Congratulations to CHS to being the first high school in the state of Nevada and one in 163 schools to receive national recognition out of more than 11,000 schools nationally.

This week's senior spotlight is on Curtis DeVore.

Curtis has a 3.9 grade-point average and is enrolled in American government, rhetoric persuasion, precalculus, media portfolio and video portfolio.

In addition to being a great student, Curtis excels in media and film production, having produced more than 25 videos.

He founded his own business called MTN Media, which specializes in web design and video production. As a result of successfully operating his own business, Curtis was awarded a Young Entrepreneur Scholarship by the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation. This scholarship was awarded to only 3 percent of those applying.

Curtis also has won awards for his videos through his participation in Skills USA. He and his production team have been first place winners at the Reno Film Festival.

Curtis also is an avid skier and has been freestyle skiing for seven years. He recently took first place at the Stateline Showdown at Heavenly Ski Resort.

Next year, Curtis will be attending the Colorado Film School in Aurora, Colo., with plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in cinematography.

Carson High School is very proud to have Curtis as a part of their community.

Safe Grad is the annual celebration held for Carson High School's graduating seniors.

The all-night party is sponsored by the PTSA with the support of the sheriff's department and many community members and businesses. It begins the night of graduation and ends early the following morning when the graduates board buses for a trip to Six Flags Amusement Park in Vallejo, Calif.

The party is held at the Carson City Community Center and includes entertainment, music, swimming and food.

It is a fun and safe way for seniors to celebrate graduation with their classmates.  

Seniors need to register by May 19 to attend both the Safe Grad party and the trip to Six Flags. Seniors wishing to attend only the party can turn in registration through the end of school. Registration materials were mailed to the Class of 2011 in April, but also are available at the CHS finance office.

The Safe Grad party is free and the trip to Six Flags is $40. For more information, please contact Sally Champion at schampion@fs.fed.us or 230-8546.

National Honor Society is hosting a blood drive in Carson High School's small gym 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17.

You can make an appointment at unitedbloodservices.org. To thank you for donating blood, United Blood Services will perform a "total cholesterol" test on a sample from the donation.

Your confidential result will be available on the website within seven days of your donation.
